October 2004: The Modern House is formed, inspired by FRS Yorke’s influential book of the same name.
August 2007: The Modern House sells its first ‘Span’ house, on the Cator estate in Blackheath.

Twenty years ago, The Modern House was a mere kernel of an idea; today, it is widely recognised as the UK’s leading design-led estate agency. How did we get here?

Recently, co-founders Matt Gibberd and Albert Hill were asked this very question on BBC Radio 4’s Gap Finders. Whilst diligently doing their research for the interview, they were prompted to reflect on the key events, people and places that have shaped the company.

From our first listing to our dramatic defeat in the Estate Agents’ Cup, via podcasts, filmmaking and team outings, our company timeline highlights some of the moments we’re just a little bit proud of – and some of the most notable homes we’ve had the pleasure of passing on.

As we head into our third decade, we look forward to what the next mid-century has in store …
