A concise list of reasons to buy Issue No.4 of The Modern House Magazine

“It’s really important to take advantage of whatever access you have to the natural world, even if it’s just going for a walk in the park,” says Ozohu Adoh, founder of Epara Skincare, in the latest spring/summer edition of The Modern House Magazine – and we couldn’t agree more. We agree so much, in fact, that we have dedicated Issue No.4 to exploring the ways we live, protect, enjoy and interact with nature, at home and beyond. To celebrate its launch, here are five reasons why picking up a copy is a very natural decision indeed…

A brilliantly talented roster of contributors bring their unique perspectives on design, architecture and modern life

One of our favourite things about working on a magazine is the process of collaborating with some seriously talented and creative individuals. One of these is photographer Rich Stapleton, who, with his signature sensitivity to space and light, has captured the atmosphere of the house and gardens at Turn End in Buckinghamshire (more on that below). Similarly, we’re thrilled to have worked with writer Ewa Effiom and photographer Anselm Ebulue, who have bought the story of landscape design collective Wayward into vivid bloom.

An indulgent recipe for tortilla de patatas – and how to enjoy it – from an epicurean artists’ retreat in Mallorca

Potatoes, olive oil, onion, eggs: a simple quartet but a satisfyingly luxurious one when made into a Spanish tortilla – especially when enjoyed outside on a sunny day, perhaps with a steady flow of white wine. Do as they do at Casa Balandra, a design-filled artists’ residency in Mallorca, and indulge in the art of sobremesa, “that Mediterranean notion of dinner going on for ever”, as Claudia del Olmo, founder of Casa Balandra, defines it.

Our co-founder, Albert Hill, makes a trip to a very special place indeed: his favourite ever house

As co-founder of an estate agency, you can bet that Albert Hill has seen his fair share of living spaces. And, this being The Modern House, you can also bet that those include the most extraordinary homes in the county. His favourite? Turn End, designed and built in the early 1960s by Peter and Margaret Aldington. The couple are still in residence today, overseeing the house and gardens that are a cult favourite for those in the know – which will be you too, when you get your copy.

Summer starts early

You needn’t wait for a summer getaway to catch some rays with our magazine to hand. Bask in Los Angeles’ late-afternoon sunlight at the home of collector and gallerist Alex Tieghi-Walker, then hit the beach at a contemporary treehouse-inspired home on Australia’s coastline. That’s all before a stimulating conversation at a Oaxacan creative residency under the hot Mexican sun.

A special photography project that celebrates the Barbican Centre’s 40th anniversary

Because no one likes a stickler for the rules, we have a story that is decidedly off-theme, focusing as it does on arguably one of the most unnatural of buildings: the brutalist Barbican Centre, in all its chunky concrete glory. It turns 40 this year, so we tasked photographer Jade Smith with showing a familiar building in a different light, by looking back to the 2016 exhibition ‘Strange and Familiar’, in which Britain was captured by international photographers.
