Tastes like Christmas: The Modern Christmas Cocktail

The Modern House cocktail
Untitled Bar, London

We’ve got our festive playlist sorted, and we’ve sought out the most showstopping home venues for entertaining. To complete The Modern House Party preparations, we’ve partnered with Untitled Bar – mixologist Tony Conigliaro’s acclaimed Dalston venue – to find the perfect modern Christmas cocktail.

We wanted a drink that reflected the themes at the heart of Modernism – space, light and a truth to materials – with a festive twist! We think we’ve found it …

Introducing the ‘Monochrome’.

The cocktail was initially inspired by the National Gallery’s ‘Monochrome’ exhibition, which explores the process of painting in black and white – favouring light and form over colour and ornamentation – and was adapted for The Modern House. A long drink with four carefully combined ingredients, the Monochrome is deliciously pared back and refreshing, with a hint of Christmas cheer.

Monochrome
40ml gin
20ml marzipan syrup
15ml fresh lemon juice
Soda water top

To make: Fill a highball glass with cubed ice. Add all the ingredients, except the soda, and stir to combine. Top with soda and stir gently to serve.

To make the marzipan syrup, blend 100g marzipan with 100ml of water. Strain the mix and keep the marzipan water. For every 100g of marzipan water, add 200g of castor sugar and stir to combine.
