As Christmas approaches, The Modern House team have been searching for the perfect soundtrack to the party season. We asked our Sales Advisor, Corey Hemingway, to curate The Modern House Party Playlist as the ultimate alternative accompaniment for any festive gathering.

Corey says:
“My dad has a massive record collection, so I’ve been surrounded by music and vinyl from a young age – it was almost inevitable that I’d grow up with a close relationship to them. When I came of age I started going to clubs in London, like Plastic People, and becoming familiar with DJs who purely played vinyl. That led me to start collecting and playing records myself, so I could bring home a snippet of my clubbing experiences. When I go out I like to hear a wide range of genres, which I’ve tried to reflect in the playlist.

“London has an amazing nightlife, but I think the club culture has changed from what it used to be because of the closure of certain independent venues. We need Plastic People back! I feel really lucky to be able to go to Berlin regularly as my boyfriend lives there, and as a city I think it’s done really well to protect and preserve an authentic sense of club community. Amsterdam seems to be doing the same with places like De School, which is beautiful and has a great vibe. I wanted to capture some of this authenticity in the playlist.

“I buy most of my records from independent sellers and shops. I love sifting through dusty stacks of vinyl, picking one out just for its cover, then listening to it and discovering it’s a gem! Some of the tracks on the playlist have been sourced from different places I’ve travelled to. I discovered Sivuca’s ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ cover last year whilst I was in Brazil. I try and pick up a record in every city I travel to.

“I love the physicality of records – they feel more like art objects to me, than just a way of listening to music. Playing them becomes a kind of ritual. It makes you stop and appreciate what you’re putting on, as opposed to something like, say, Spotify, which encourages you to just put on a playlist and not take note of the artists you’re hearing (the irony!). I guess that’s the process I’ve tried to capture in the playlist though, so that each track feels considered and like part of a bigger picture. Enjoy!”
