In Bloom: beautiful gardens from our current listings

Summer is swiftly approaching – and with brighter forecasts, balmy evenings and the smell of BBQs in the air, all eyes go to the garden. Be it a slither or sizable space, having immediate access to the outdoors is particularly delightful during the sun-filled months, especially when the time calls for a cocktail or two. From an idyllic cottage garden in the countryside to a pretty communal garden in the capital, here are six homes with inspiring outdoor spaces for sale.

Holly Place, London N3

In the heart of Hampstead, this Grade II-listed Regency house is wrapped in a leafy oasis that’s almost unimaginably within a four-minute walk to the Northern Line. A deep front garden sets the house back from the road and has a towering Monterey pine tree at its centre. The incredibly secluded, flagstone-paved rear garden is surrounded by greenery and steeped in light throughout the day from the east and south, while its silver birch tree creates sun-dappled shade to read books under. French doors in the piano room open to a wide, equally beautiful garden to the side of the house. But the real pièce de resistance is the decked roof terrace with views of the city – just the spot for a spritz at sundown.

St Weonards, Herefordshire

This four-bedroom house in the friendly village of St Weonards in Herefordshire is set in beautifully landscaped gardens with an array of wildlife and breathtaking views of the countryside. There are so many different pockets of space to explore and enjoy, from potential dining areas and yoga spots to a large pond, a summerhouse and private woodland of just under two acres. Floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the house ensure you reap the calming benefits of nature around the clock, and there’s also a light-drenched garden room, currently in use as an artist’s studio.

Peckham Rye II, London SE15

This two-bedroom apartment within a Victorian terrace house in Peckham, south-east London, has a garden that proves neither privacy nor size is always of importance. Its pretty pastel-hued kitchen and dining area lead to a small terracotta-tiled patio lined with potted plants and an abundance of ivy. At the end of the garden, however, is a wooden fence that leads to a large communal garden shared with one other flat. Tulips and forget-me-nots are planted around a pond and brick pathway, which leads to a shed and a greenhouse, much to the joy of the green-fingered. It’s a lovely space for neighbours to socialise, especially in the sun-filled months ahead.

Mornington Terrace, London NW1

This five-storey Grade II-listed house situated within the Camden Conservation Area, north London, will please those who love to host. Concertina doors in the kitchen open to a decked area perfectly sized for a barbecue grill and outdoor seating. A few steps take you up to a long paved garden almost 35ft in length, with plenty of room for a large dining table and chairs. Overarching palm, fern and banana trees provide shade and privacy, as well as a year-round tropical mood – come rain or shine.

Norcliffe Hall, Drive Styal, Cheshire

For the perfect cottage garden that is ideal for a family, look to this renovation of a 17th-century house by architect Annabelle Tugby, who currently lives here with her husband and three children. It doesn’t get much more picture-perfect than growing up in a garden with a treehouse, large strawberry patch and rolling natural landscapes just a fence away. “We’re surrounded by fields of rare breed cattle and somehow, seeing them every day from my bedroom sums up everything about rural life. I love it!” Annabelle told us when we visited for our ‘My Modern House’ series. The timber-clad terrace calls for dining in the warmer months and there is a secluded annexe that works well well as either an office or a place for guests to sleep.

Tyrwhitt Road II, London SE4

An unexpected series of serene green spaces lie within this sleek two-bedroom house in Brockley, south-east London. Large glass sliding doors in the dining area lead to a peaceful rear garden with plenty of space for dining al fresco, surrounded by beds of climbing plants. There is also an enclosed gravelled courtyard, accessed via the living room – what better spot for your morning coffee and a quick read of the paper before starting the day? The main bedroom has its own east-facing balcony where you can enjoy a view across the city from the comfort of a sun lounger.
