Love at First Sight: homes with spectacular views for sale

Is there anything quite like waking up to a breathtaking view? We’re particularly partial to panoramas of rolling fields, big blue waves and slick cityscapes – all of which appear in this story. From a flat in St Leonards overlooking the sea to a Limehouse apartment peering across the City, here are five homes on the market with vistas worth investing in.

Carlow House II, London NW1

In Camden, a short walk away from Regent’s Park and Primrose Hill (itself one of London’s best viewpoints), is a building best described as an urban oasis. Introducing Carlow House: a former Edwardian warehouse that, over the years, has been coaxed into a contemporary collection of apartments. Having been subject to a 2016 renovation, the communal areas are light-filled and lush, thanks to the striking glass roof and floating planters that decorate the space. As for this apartment? It’s enviably located on the top floor and, in the south-facing living room, features floor-to-ceiling Crittall windows framing the city skyline. If the private balcony doesn’t take your fancy, head upstairs to the communal roof terrace, from which the views are even more enchanting.

Marina VI, St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex

Sometimes, nothing beats being by the seaside – especially when there are views of glistening turquoise waters, as is the case from this charming apartment. Overlooking the English Channel, the south-facing one-bed is just over the road from the shingle beach of St Leonards (from which a short stroll will take you to the equally delightful coastal town Hastings). Inside, we love the original floor-to-ceiling sash windows and French doors framing said views; likewise, the beach-facing balcony that offers a space to sit and breathe in the salty air. And then there’s the building itself, a pastel-blue Victorian villa that’s also postcard-pretty.

Yawl Hill Lane, Uplyme, Devon

Sitting near the border of Devon and Dorset – two of the most picturesque counties in the country – this seven-bedroom house has bucolic views that are tough to beat. They are best enjoyed on a sun-drenched day, when grassy fields in glorious shades of green and mature leafy trees meet bright-blue skies. The quaint picket fence, which separates the private garden (complete with greenhouse, veg patches and a summer house) from the countryside, from which sheep regularly graze, is all part of the appeal. We’ll happily take in the panoramas here while relaxing in the indoor hammock, ideally positioned by floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room, or from the expansive patio.

Dundee Wharf, London E14

When it comes to views of the water, it’s not only the seaside we like to be beside. As this two-bedroom home within Dundee Wharf in Limehouse proves, life by the river Thames is rather remarkable too. The award-winning development itself sits on the site of a former shipyard and was built to a design by Rex Wilkinson, a co-founder of post-modernist practice CZWG, in 1997. Its pièce de resistance? This top-floor apartment: the only one in the building that has access to a roof terrace with uninterrupted views of the water and the City beyond. From here, you can spot many of London’s most-loved landmarks, from the Shard to the Gherkin – a sight perhaps best enjoyed while sipping on a sundowner or two.

Trevorrick, St Issey, Cornwall

This Cornish home – comprising an energy-efficient house and separate studio that collectively span around 4,770 sq ft – has it all: far-reaching vistas of both open farmland and the beautiful blue waters of the tidal estuary. It’s only a 15-minute drive to Padstow, the characterful coastal town in North Cornwall, not that you’d know it when here. A series of wonderfully quiet living spaces, the house is cocooned by green fields and counts cows as its closest neighbours. Inside, there are many spots to take in the sights, but we particularly enjoy admiring the landscape from the first-floor floating deck, which is accessed via the open-plan dining and living room. The owners’ current set-up, including a telescope, is particularly admirable.
