Natural Beauty: home inspiration for plant enthusiasts

Contrary to popular belief, plants are not simply a millennial trend. Our attraction to nature is an innate part of being human – and the benefits we get from greenery prove this. They reduce toxins in the surrounding environment and increase productivity, creativity and happiness, so it’s no wonder that leafy greens have infiltrated our homes – and hearts. Naturally, then, there are plenty of homes for sale that provide inspiration for both the beginners and more experienced green-fingered among us, from a Victorian house with views of lush treetops and a verdant garden to a contemporary apartment with an indoor conservatory.

Icon Apartments, London SE1

This mid-century apartment brings an entirely new meaning to the phrase ‘concrete jungle’. Situated in south-east London between Bermondsey and Borough – ideally in reach of the food market when you’re feeling peckish – this home is proof that you don’t need a garden to live among lashings of greenery in the capital. Instead, there’s a clever garden room that brings the outdoors in. A glass conservatory holds a myriad of hanging leaves and potted palms, forming a picturesque, Amazon-like scene. It contains a singular chair, which is just perfect for breathing in the plant-infused air and escaping into a good book.

Limehouse Cut, London E14

Even the entrance to this warehouse conversion will bring plant lovers joy: arches of ivy are the first thing you’ll be greeted with here. Likewise, the series of mismatched pots in the communal rooftop garden will bring plenty of inspiration. The current owners utilise the exceptionally bright penthouse apartment’s breadth of light by allowing their house plants (and, as pictured, their feline) to bathe in uninterrupted sunshine. A considered collection of plants trails through the space, concluding in a neat presentation of terracotta pots on the sunny private terrace.

Hayfield Road, Orpington

This home in Orpington, Bromley, features a delightful branch of monstera deliciosa crawling up the walls and sprawling along the ceiling – something that’s sure to make amateur green-fingered folk struggling to make their plants grow, well, green with envy. Designed by HWK Architects, the eco-efficient newbuild is overcome by nature: the main living space extends through sliding doors into a wide grass lawn surrounded by shrubs and plants; meanwhile, the home study is cleverly showered in rich leaves, making it a prime spot for productivity. Plus, The National Trust’s Hawkswood Forest is just a mile away, meaning you’re only a stroll away from complete immersion in nature.

Huntingdon Street, London N1

Located on a quiet, tree-lined street in Islington, north London, is a home with a thriving community of plants – both inside and out. The greenery of the idyllic garden can be viewed through large Crittall windows in the kitchen – a view that goes particularly well with a cup of fresh coffee in the morning. Designed by landscape gardener Miranda Brooks, the former courtyard garden is now a lush oasis where deep-set verdant foliage frames the patio. Inside, subtle hints of green have been peppered throughout. The living space, for example, sees plush textures and animal prints sitting happily alongside large, jungle-like plants.

North End, Wirksworth, Derbyshire

There’s something infinitely appealing about the combination of the green of house plants against a bare-bricked wall. This rustic converted malthouse in the conservation area of Wirksworth, Derbyshire, is an excellent case in point. Here, house plants have been used sparingly throughout the home – from the money plant placed on the desk to the rubber plant in the living area, each plant sings in its carefully considered spot. The outdoor space is worth mentioning, too: lively plants frame a patio, which provides the perfect opportunity for budding gardeners to practice growing flowers, herbs and the like.
