The Modern House Magazine No.6

Our homes and the spaces we occupy are markers in our lives – of where we are going, where we came from and where we are now. They can transport us, mark the end and beginning of chapters, and be places we escape to. Issue No.6 explores homes as waypoints in our journeys through life.

In its pages you will find an exclusive first look at designer Samuel Ross’ new home. After growing up in Northamptonshire he has gone on to work with the likes of Nike, Apple and Virgil Abloh, but has completed a very circular journey back to… well, Northamptonshire, renovating a house he walked past every day as a boy.

We meet designer/maker James Shaw, who has just come to the end of a five-year journey to realise his designs for a modern sunken house in an east London conservation area. Also in east London, Lisa Jones, one half of trans-Atlantic design studio Atelier LK, takes us on a journey through her day, while her New York counterpart, Ruby Keane, does the same, showing how distance is no barrier to the duo’s creative collaboration and idea sharing.

In Mallorca, architect and presenter Piers Taylor surveys the brilliance of Can Lis, the house Danish architect Jørn Utzon – of Sydney Opera House fame – designed for his family in the early 1970s. In Kerala, India, photographer Keethana Kunnath documents themes of belonging, identity and nostalgia in her hometown, while in Egypt home cook and Instagram hit Marie Cassis reveals her ultimate source of inspiration in the kitchen: home.
