"The building bears the hallmarks of 1930's design with wonderfully curved white balconies, Crittal windows, and duck-egg blue details in the communal areas."

Dumbarton Court is a smart Modern Movement building built to a design by Couch & Coupland in 1939. This bright two-bedroom apartment has elevated views from the third floor to the treetops of Rush Common opposite, and has been sensitively refurbished in keeping with the building’s intentions.

Dumbarton Court lies on Brixton Hill, inside the Rush Common and Brixton Hill Conservation Area. The building bears the hallmarks of 1930’s design with wonderfully curved white balconies, Crittal windows, and duck-egg blue details in the communal areas. A recent and well-conceived refurbishment ensured that the facade of the building retains its original stature, with new steel-framed Crittal windows.

Entry is to the hallway, that runs the length of the apartment. This has been fitted with custom cabinetry, to provide extra storage and additional kitchen facilities. To the left is the living room, which has large windows that run across one corner, and a set of doors that open to the balcony. There are good original details throughout, such as mid-tone floorboards underfoot and smart slate windowsills.

The kitchen has been recently fitted with pale blue cabinetry that echoes the blue details in the communal areas and marble tiles. Ceramic floor tiles extend into the hallway, making clever use of this space. The bathroom is similarly conceived in white and pale pink.

The two bedrooms have picture rails and original floorboards, and the larger has inbuilt storage. Owing to the flat’s south-facing orientation, these rooms are wonderfully bright.

Dumbarton Court is a twenty-minute walk from both Brixton and Clapham. Venn Street in Clapham is a particularly notable destination, as is The Pavement on the edge of Clapham Common, where The Dairy serves seasonal Modern European dishes of incredibly high quality.

Brixton is well-known for its food and bar scene, with Brixton Village, Market Row and Acre Lane all being great destinations. The Ritzy Cinema, Electric Brixton and Brixton Academy are much-loved institutions while Brockwell Park (and its Lido) are also within walking distance. Newly opened is The Department Store, the grand renovated 1876 Bon Marche building that now houses collaborative workspaces, a Pure Vinyl record shop, a community Post Office and Canova Hall restaurant and bar.

Brixton Station has Victoria Line Underground Services, and Clapham Common runs train on both branches of the Northern Line. The overground can also be found at Herne Hill, Streatham and Balham. There are excellent bus connections and cycle routes along Brixton Hill.
