“A creatively renovated Victorian terrace a short walk from beautiful beaches of Margate”

A short walk from the heart of Margate’s Old Town sits this beautifully renovated two-bedroom Victorian terraced house. Large sash windows set into wide bays cast honeyed light across the raw plaster finishes within. Original features sit alongside modern materials to create bright, minimalist living spaces with character and warmth. A rear garden serves as a peaceful suntrap with plenty of room for seating and planting. The beach, harbour wall and restaurants of Margate are a few minutes’ walk away.

The Tour

The house is approached along a quiet residential street, close to the centre of Margate’s Old Town, set slightly back from the seafront. The façade is characterised by a large bay window on the ground floor and ornate brick detailing. Corten steel planters sit atop a low brick wall defining the south-facing front garden with space for a bench from which to enjoy the evening sun.

Entry is to a hallway, which opens out to the main living space on the ground floor. Bathed in natural light, care of the newly fitted timber-framed and double-glazed sash windows at the front; this is a warm space where carefully preserved brick hearths and original floorboards sit alongside raw plaster walls casting a gentle pink hue around the room. Cast-iron radiators have been sympathetically added, and a metal crossbeam has been exposed overhead, introducing robust industrial elements into the space. At the rear of the living room, the current owners have established a separate dining area with hardwood french doors stepping out to the patio.

The kitchen is a bright space with a large window overlooking the garden. Tall bespoke birch ply cabinets sit alongside sleek stainless steel units and work surfaces, topped with an angular porcelain sink. There is plenty of work and storage space. To the side, a reclaimed Crittall-style door opens to the garden.

Pine spindles descend from the first floor, forming an almost sculptural balustrade around the staircase. The main bedroom spans the full width of the house and is illuminated by a sash window. The second bedroom overlooks the garden and is a good-sized double. The twin chimney breasts on the ground floor carry through upstairs, with both bedrooms centred around the striking hearths.

A large bathroom sits off the landing. Wrapped in Carrara marble, this is a dramatic space, given an industrial edge by its exposed brick wall and copper and brushed nickel fixtures and fittings. There is a spacious walk-in shower, and a free-standing bath and stone resin basin both by Lusso Stone.

Outdoor Space

French windows lead from the dining area to the garden, along a limestone paved side return which broadens out to a patio terrace by the kitchen with plenty of space for a dining table and chairs.

From here, the terraced garden rises a few steps to a lawn surrounded by mature roses. At the foot of the garden, another seating area has been defined with fine granite gravel. This beautiful green oasis offers a secluded spot not far from the bustle of the nearby beaches.
