"Tucked away behind Deal Beach, the house exhibits elegant Regency-era proportions, with the addition of a bright contemporary extension"

This charming two-bedroom house is positioned on Water Street, a gently winding residential street in Deal, on the Kent Coast. The house is tucked away just behind Deal Beach, a short walk from Deal’s iconic concrete pier and the shops, cafes and pub of Deal’s picturesque Old Town. The house was extended at the rear in recent years, creating a bright and spacious set of spaces which flow out onto a private garden.

Built in 1831, the architecture of Turner House is typical of the conservation area in which it sits; the terraces are an elegant mix of Georgian brick, white render and Kent peg tiles, which gently curve through the ‘Old Town’. The house is positioned in the middle of its terrace and its front facade is characterised by two large sash windows (a third window was bricked up, presumably in accordance with the window tax, which was still in place during the Regency).

Entry is gained via a large reception room at the front of the house. It has original floorboards throughout, an exposed fireplace and elegant panelling on either side of the hearth. A long corridor leads past the W/C and a snug, with wood-burning stove, through to the open-plan kitchen and dining room. These spaces are bright and flow seamlessly together and form the heart of the house. There are large ceramic tiles underfoot, skylights above and two sets of glazed doors which open out directly onto the walled garden. It has been mostly laid to gravel and has a scattering of mature plants and shrubs.

The first floor comprises a large master bedroom at the front of the house, a slightly smaller second bedroom overlooking the garden, and a family bathroom. These spaces have wood-panelled walls, built-in storage spaces and sections of raw plaster.

Water Street is positioned right in the heart of the Old Town in Deal, a series of winding narrow residential streets formed of quaint Georgian cottages, with an array of traditional pubs, including the famed Ship Inn, Middle Street Fish Bar, Le Pinardier wine bar and importer, and The Rose Hotel and restaurant.

The beach at Deal, with its array of wooden fishing boats, is less than five minute’s walk from the house. Deal Pier, built entirely of concrete and steel, is nearby and is a wonderful stroll regardless of the weather, with a glass-clad cafe at its end offering uninterrupted views out over the channel.

Deal has a mainline railway station running services from London St Pancras in under an hour and a half. It is easily accessible by car, from London via the M2 in under two hours.
