'A beautiful, double-sided wood-burner is the focal point of the ground floor; its steel flume rises up to the roof, catching the light via galleried glazing'

Designed by architect Richard Salt and hand-built by the current owner, The Corner House is a unique and truly exciting contemporary house, positioned on Camborne Road in Sutton. Internal accommodation extends to approximately 1,788 sq ft across two floors, with a dramatic double-height entrance hall and reception room. The house’s peaceful garden also has a summer house, perfect for whiling away the afternoons in any weather.

The house is so named thanks its position and the orientation of its plot. Tucked into the curve of Camborne Road, its distinctive cedar cladding is partially hidden from view, care of a large purple beech tree. However, on approach the scale of the facade, and particularly the double-height sections of glazing, are unmistakable. Volume, light and flow have been considered in all aspects of the house and natural light cascades across the ground-floor open-plan areas to wonderful effect.

Access is gained via a beautiful front garden, set back from the quiet residential street. A raised deck leads across the lawn, past a pond, to the front door on the south-western facade. Immediately upon entry, the large reception and dining rooms open out beneath a double-height ceiling and full-height glazing. A beautiful, double-sided wood-burner by Stuv is the focal point of these spaces; its steel flume rising up to the roof, between two large skylights. There are floorboards of engineered-oak underfoot and underfloor heating, as well as a zoned Sonos system. The yellow wood-burner acts as a partition of sorts between the dining room and the living room just beyond, which has a further set of glazed doors to the garden at the rear.

There is a raised decked area directly accessed from the house which is perfect for dining outside in the warmer months. There are beds of mature plants and shrubs leading to the foot of the garden where a summer house occupies an excellent position, looking back at the house. This space has full-height glazed and fully wired for television and audio. It could easily be used as a home office, or alternatively a peaceful retreat from the main house.

To the other side of the dining room on the ground floor there is a modern kitchen, with hand-made oak storage cupboards, a gas hob, integrated oven, steam oven and microwave, as well as three warming drawers. The remainder of this floor is occupied by a guest WC and wet-room, and a plant room which is home to the house’s mechanical heat ventilation recovery unit, ensuring a good flow of fresh air throughout, year round.

An hand-made oak staircase leads up to the galleried first floor, where a study occupies a wonderful position overlooking the communal areas of the house below and out, at tree-top level to the street. There are three further bedrooms on this floor, including the master bedroom and en-suite wet-room with limestone tiles and a rainwater shower. There is a further wetroom on this floor.

The Corner House is positioned on Camborne Road, a leafy residential street just ten minutes’ walk from Sutton train station. Sutton is the eponymous town of the south-London borough and is positioned on the lower slopes of the North Downs. Sutton High Street has a vast array of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants, including the Empire Cinema. No. 1 Thai is a wonderful restaurant and a particular favourite with locals. A large Waitrose can be found nearby in Banstead.

Nonsuch Park is a vast park and woodland, incorporating beautiful woodland walks, a crenellated country house and cafe. It is a short drive, or a slightly longer walk from the house.

The town is particularly popular with commuters; Southern Rail services run directly to London Victoria or London Bridge in just under 30 minutes and Clapham Junction in 20 minutes. Alternatively, Thameslink services run to Blackfriars and the City in a similar time.
