"The design of the space is a pleasing pairing: light and quiet easy-living coupled with exuberant playfulness, with shots of colour splashed through the interior."

Occupying an incredibly quiet and peaceful position on the edge of Pentney Lakes, this three-bedroom holiday house offers a tranquil getaway, just 20 minutes from the Norfolk coastline. The house sits on a generous green plot and internally, there is 1,292 sqft of open-plan living space and a large terrace to the rear. There is a broad and eclectic collection of 83 lodges on the site, but unique to this house, aside from its contemporary architectural design, are the wonderful views. A breath-taking vista of the lake stretches out from the front of the house and an idyllic panorama south, across an expanse of fields and farmlands, from the rear terrace.

The house was designed by the architect-owner and consists of two steel-framed boxes, organised in a lateral layout across one storey which cantilevers over the timber structure below. Designed with a simple ease of living in mind, the interior optimises light and space and is loosely organised in a relaxed, open-plan layout, which can be easily reconfigured. A confident use of colour gives both the inside and outside a fun and exuberant sensibility, offset against the natural, honest and unadulterated use of materials, retaining a real sense of honesty in the construction.

The main entrance is positioned to the back of the house, via a three-panelled set of sliding glass doors spanning the length of the living room. Opening directly out onto the timber-clad terrace, there is a great sense of flow between the internal and outside spaces. Natural light floods through either side of the room and the space feels peaceful and extraordinarily quiet.

A deep grey bespoke kitchen, with all the essential integrated appliances, is positioned to one side of the central living space, with a free-standing work space and dining table conveniently positioned opposite. A fantastically vibrant shot of pink plywood spans the length of the opposite wall, forming a line of inset cabinetry and in the centre of the plan there is a lounge area.

The master bedroom, a beautifully light space with extensive glazing, is positioned to the right of the living room, with front-to-back aspect. The bed is positioned to one side of a low wall, with a platform on the other side which can be used as another sleeping area or as a day bed / living space. The whole configuration can be easily adjusted and sliding timber doors enable privacy from the rest of the space. The ensuite bathroom is tiled in dusty pink, with both bath and shower.

On the opposite side of the house there are two further bedrooms, one with views south across the surrounding fields, the other towards the lake. To the front of the house is the narrower terrace and its wonderful aspect directly out to the lake and surrounding mature trees.

For cooler months, underfloor heating runs throughout the house and for practicalities, ample storage space is tucked away in the undercroft. True to its modernist style, the cantilever provisions the car port.

The lakes offer great opportunity for water sports throughout the summer and the site also has a yoga studio and gym, available for use at a nominal annual charge.

The highlights of the Norfolk coastline are just a 20-minute drive away but a generous selection of countryside walks lead directly from the house. The neighbouring towns offer basic grocery shopping but for a broader selection, King’s Lynn is an eight miles journey north. Direct train lines run from King’s Lynn to London King’s Cross in one hour and 49 minutes.
