'Wonderful panoramic views sweep out across Torbay from the roof terrace, with the red sands, quiet coves and high sandstone cliffs of Devon's coastline just a short stroll away.'

This superb example of a Streamline Moderne house was designed, in part, by the son of Sir Edwin Lutyens in the early 1930s and is located in a sought-after residential area in the coastal town of Torquay. Subject to a sensitive renovation in recent years, internal accommodation now extends to around 2,700 sq ft spanning three storeys, with far-reaching sea views sweeping across Torbay from the balconies and roof terrace. The wonderful South Devon coastline is within easy walking distance, with Hollicombe beach just 600m from the house.

Approached via a quiet residential road, Mango House occupies an elevated position, with external steps, flanked by a tiered walled garden, leading up to the primary entrance. An integral garage and private driveway provide off-street parking and storage.

The entrance hallway is bright and welcoming, with timber flooring running underfoot. An expansive open-plan kitchen and dining room is set out across the easterly side at ground level, a beautifully light space with views to the sea from the kitchen window.

Powder-coated aluminium glass doors allow light to flood into the dining room, opening the space onto the terrace and rear garden during warmer months. A well-proportioned office or study is positioned adjacently, with full-height glazing framing views to the garden. On the opposite side of the ground floor, there is a lounge and adjoining conservatory; a wonderfully light-filled space, ideal for summer lunches or morning coffee.

Three of the four double bedrooms are positioned on the first floor, each with a good provision of in-built cabinetry and storage space. The principal bedroom has an interconnected living space, large dressing room, en-suite wet room and a balcony overlooking the gardens. A second guest bedroom also has a balcony, with wonderful views across the channel. There is also a family bathroom on this floor.

Light pours through double-height corner glazing, illuminating the central stairwell, where an open-tread beech staircase leading to the self-contained living space across the second floor. Ideally suited as an independent living space, the fourth bedroom has an en-suite wet room, kitchen and a decked roof terrace, with superlative far-reaching sea views.

Externally, secluded rear gardens are laid to lawn, with tiered terraces and a tall privet hedging providing privacy. Deep herbaceous borders are planted with agapanthus and pittosporum, a wild-flower bank and apple, birch, maple and cypress trees. A heated Scandinavian summer house is positioned in one corner of the garden and there is also a garden store.

Sensitively renovated and extended in recent years to code 4 building standards, Mango house has been designed with energy-efficiency in mind, with excellent insulation assisting fuel efficiency.

The position of the house is excellent for sailing opportunities and the wonderful coastal landscapes for which the surrounding area is well known. Hollicombe Beach is just 15 minutes’ walk from the house and Preston Sands and Paignton reachable in five minutes by car. The centre of Torquay, easily reached on foot, has a good selection of supermarkets, independent shops and cafes. There are also many good dining venues nearby, including the Michelin starred The Elephant in Torquay.

The house sits within the catchment area for a number of highly-rated schools and rail connections are very good, with Torquay train station, less than a mile from the house, providing mainline services between Cornwall and London. A direct service to London Paddington runs regularly from Torquay, with a journey time of around three hours and 8 minutes.
