“An exacting renovation celebrates the architectural heritage of this Thames-side apartment”

This wonderful Grade II-listed one-bedroom apartment on the banks of the Thames in Deptford has been lovingly renovated, celebrating its heritage with a modern twist. The reclaimed floors of Middlesbrough Cathedral and original wooden cross beams sit alongside ply cabinetry, by carpenter Emiliano Malferrari, and Mandarin Stone tiling to create a living space layered in history and texture. Striking arched windows open to a private balcony and the luscious communal gardens shaded by an ancient mulberry tree. The Thames path leads directly from the apartment towards Deptford and Greenwich.

The Building

The building is believed to be a design of John Rennie the Elder, one of the principal civil engineers of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The Victualling Yard, now known as Foreshore, was constructed between 1781 and 1798 and played a pivotal role in sustaining the British Naval fleet through to the 1960s. Due to its historical significance, the entire surrounding area is listed, including the river wall. It is therefore exquisitely preserved with a quiet street lying between the riverbank and Foreshore which has free parking.

The Tour

The distinctive building is characterised by a warm brown brick facade punctuated by white-framed sash windows and arched piers. Entry is on the ground floor via an electric gate.

The apartment opens to a wide hallway with plenty of built-in storage. Immediately, the interlaced forms of the herringbone parquet draw the eye deeper into the space. The flooring is reclaimed from Middlesbrough Cathedral, with each Iroko wooden block board painstakingly restored and laid by hand by the current owner. The hallway rounds a corner into the striking open-plan kitchen and living room. A grand arched window draws light deep into the apartment and centres the space.

The kitchen wraps around the back corner of the room, cleverly demarcated by the use of subtle pink paint and warm lighting. Ply cabinet fronts are topped with Formica work surfaces. Mandarin Stone tiles wrap around the walls creating a splashback, and a slim recess sits above the worktop on the rear wall providing extra storage and display space.

The original structural beams have been used to frame a distinct sitting area beside the door to the balcony and its enticing view of the communal gardens. The current owners have established a separate workspace between the living room and hallway with space for a desk and chair.

A pocket door slides back to reveal the main bedroom. The same floor and colour palette establish continuity between this space and the rest of the apartment. An arched window overlooking the communal gardens combined with the high ceilings means that this room has a real sense of grandeur.

The bathroom is just off the hallway. This is an exquisitely finished space with a roll-top bath, brushed brass fixtures and fittings, and lustrous green Mandarin Stone tiles with a brass tile trim. There are separate utility and coat cupboards in the hallway, one of which serves as a utility cupboard with a washing machine and tumble dryer.

Outdoor Space

A door within the curved windows of the apartment opens out to a private balcony, where there is space for plenty of planters or a bistro table and chairs. Down a short flight of steps, another seating area is set beneath a large apple tree.

In the communal gardens, beds are well-stocked with herbs and fruit trees, and the ancient mulberry tree at the centre casts dappled shade over the wide lawn, the perfect spot for alfresco dining or reclining in the sun.
