"Minimalism is not defined by what is not there, but by the rightness of what is..." - John Pawson

This elegant two-bedroom house is positioned at the end of a terrace on Chapter Road in Willesden. Interior accommodation is configured across two floors, with a peaceful patio garden at the rear.

Drawing on the work of John Pawson and Claudio Silvestrin, the house is characterised by its spare palette, clean lines, shadow gaps and natural materials: concrete, bamboo and large sections of glazing have been put to use in the service of  space, light and volume.

On the ground floor a concrete composite, including quartz and limestone, is notably used for the kitchen worktops, low-level shelving in the living room, and outside in the garden’s bench seating. This material was specifically chosen for its durability in domestic and external use, but also for the way the shards of quartz glint in the sunlight. This effect is typical of the house; it celebrates raw materials and simultaneously blurs the distinction between inside and out.

Entry is gained on the ground floor. A pocket door slides back to reveal an open-plan kitchen, living and dining room. The linear arrangement draws the eye to rear of the house, where a secluded paved garden is positioned beyond a beautiful set of Slimline glazed doors. Bamboo floors with underfloor heating run across the whole of the ground floor.

The kitchen is positioned behind a high, lateral ledge, which separates it from the living room, while preserving a site-line through to the garden. The living spaces have been designed with a clutter-free existence in mind; banks of white cupboards line one side of the room and currently conceal a television and a pull-out desk.

The first floor is comprised of two similarly sized bedrooms each with built-in storage spaces. There is a family bathroom on this floor with a concrete-topped Japanese bath and a row of three skylights above. The house also has a large attic with plenty of storage space.

Chapter Road is within easy reach of the shops, restaurants and cafes of Willesden High Road and the open green spaces of Gladstone Park and Roundwood Park. The nearest underground stations are Dollis Hill and Willesden Green, both running Jubilee Line services.
