"One of east London's finest Modernist buildings, thought to have been inspired by Alvar Aalto's Finnish masterpiece, Paimio"

This beautifully preserved three-bedroom apartment is located on the first floor of one of east London’s finest Modernist buildings, Bruno Court. It has a beautiful, curved Art Deco balcony overlooking the green space of Clifton Grove and the Faith Tabernacle Church to the rear.

Designed by the noted architects Burnet, Tait & Lorne, Bruno Court was built in 1935-36 as an extension to the existing German Hospital and is believed to have been inspired by Alvar Aalto’s Paimio Sanatorium in Finland. The building overlooks Fassett Square, a charming Victorian garden, a short walk from Dalston Junction. The hospital was closed in 1987 and converted to private residences in the late 1990s. Bruno Court is now Grade II-listed in recognition of its architectural significance.

This three-bedroom apartment has been the subject of a complete renovation, care of Tughela Gino Architects. The work reconfigured the layout by removing a central hallway, cutting through the center of the plan. The intervention has created direct sightlines across the apartment, which uniquely overlooks two Victorian garden squares, in an east-west orientation.

Access is gained on the second floor. To one side of the entrance hall, there is a contemporary kitchen, with blue-faced birch-ply worktops and terrazzo splashbacks. This room has dual-aspect Crittall windows to the north and west, as well as a glazed door out onto a private balcony. This space is incredibly bright and the peaceful views of Clifton Grove and the neighbouring church provide the perfect context for a morning coffee.

The large open-plan living and dining room forms the heart of the home. All of the original Crittall windows have been double-glazed and an intelligent heating system has been installed. The defining characteristic of the renovation in these rooms is certainly the reclaimed birch gym floor, sourced from a school in Scotland. These boards run throughout, connecting the smaller bedrooms and kitchen to the living room while introducing a playful sense of colour.

TGA has also designed bespoke storage solutions in all rooms, making this a beautiful and incredibly practical place to live.

There is lift access to the communal roof of the building, which has panoramic views across the city, as well as a beautiful semi-circular concrete awning in the Art Deco style

Fassett Square is a quiet enclave of buildings (predominantly Victorian houses) grouped around a pretty private garden. All residents have a key to the square.

The apartment is a short walk from Broadway Market, London Fields and the ever-popular London Fields Lido. Nearby, Dalston Junction and Dalston Kingsland stations link to Highbury & Islington, Shoreditch High Street and Canada Water via London Overground. There are many bus routes along Graham Road.
