“The houses are characterised by their butterfly plans, configured around beautiful private courtyards at the rear”

This two-bedroom house forms part of Anworth Close, a renowned modernist estate in north London. The house is configured around a private courtyard and sits on a quiet residential street a short walk from Woodford Station.

The Building

The modernist houses of Anworth Close exploit their angular jutting façades in the service of light, flowing interiors. The houses are characterised by their butterfly plans and comprise eight groups of four houses, each configured around a central courtyard. There are lovely sections of landscaped lawn and planting linking the clusters of houses.

The Tour

The house can be accessed on foot from either Anworth Close or via a pedestrianised walkway through gardens on the adjacent Glengall Road. A playful porthole window sits above the front door. Upon entry, the plan opens up into two wings; to one side there is a large living room with engineered parquet flooring and glazed doors leading out to the private courtyard; on the other lies an equally sized kitchen and dining room, with a further set of doors to the courtyard.

The symmetry of the plan establishes a wonderful consistency of light in the communal spaces, in part due to the proliferation of glazed doors. The kitchen and dining room is naturally configured towards the courtyard, with an island delineating the spaces and white tiles underfoot which emphasise the flow of light. There are integrated appliances and significant amounts of storage space, including bespoke cabinetry throughout, a window seat and wine storage.

The first floor comprises two large double bedrooms and a family bathroom. The main bedroom occupies the west wing and has an elegant canopy bed with an integrated headboard and lighting, as well as built-in wardrobes with ample storage space. The northern wing has a second large bedroom, which the current owners have configured as a study. This room has further sections of bespoke cabinetry and a desk, as well as a fold-out bed which is ideal for guests. There is also a recently renovated shower room, accessed via a pocket door, with a large skylight overhead.

Outdoor Space

The house is configured around a private courtyard. In the warmer months, this space acts as an extension of the interior and is perfect for outdoor dining. The current owners have decorated the courtyard with a selection of potted plants and a raised bed complete with a mature euonymus japonicus tree. There is also an external storage cupboard which currently houses a tumble dryer, as well as further space that could be used for storing wine and other essential provisions.

The house has its own garage with a charging port for an electric car and two non-allocated parking permits.

The Area

Anworth Close is excellently positioned for the green spaces of Epping Forest and Hainault Forest Country Park, both wild ranging forests with walking trails, lakes and children’s play areas with cafes. Locally, there are tennis, cricket, squash and hockey clubs all within a 15-minute walk.

The closest station is Woodford, just over five minutes on foot, which runs Central Line Underground services to central London in just over half an hour. There are numerous bus routes within walking distance of the house.
