“Sleek interiors sympathetically blend original Victorian features with a bright, flowing plan”

This handsome three-bedroom Victorian house is located on Alton Road in Tottenham, a short walk from Downhills Park. Set back from the street, the house has an attractive red-brick façade with stonework finished in a dark petrol blue. There is a verdant decked garden with a delightful south-facing aspect to the rear.

The Tour

The house has been sympathetically decorated throughout and exhibits a truly modern approach to living. Set behind a low parapet wall topped with a privet hedge for privacy, it is accessed via a path of rough-hewn slate tiles. An original black and white patterned step sits under a storm porch, with climbing jasmine to one side. The timber door and ground floor window frames chime with the petrol blue stonework, while the first-floor window frames are of natural timber.

The ground floor hallway is configured in a typically Victorian style, leading past the reception rooms and along to the first-floor staircase. The floors are of engineered oak with a light wash, while the walls have been painted white. The living room lies at the front of the plan, with a large bay window that draws plenty of natural light into the space; this room is open to the rear reception room and so natural light also enters from a timber-framed window adjacent to the dining area. A wood-burning stove sits beneath a decorative surround, with alcove storage to either side.

The kitchen can be found at the rear of the plan and has a similarly neutral and calming palette; cabinet doors, square floor tiles, walls and ceilings are finished in white and promote the flow of natural light via sash windows to one side. A further window and set of glazed doors open to the garden.

This neutral palette extends to the first floor where the calming aesthetic continues. The main bedroom has built-in wardrobes set in each alcove; a second double bedroom lies to the rear. There are original black metal fire grates under ornate surrounds in both rooms. The bathroom is at the centre of the plan, where vibrant turquoise Fired Earth wall tiles sit alongside bath panelling finished in white. There is a single bedroom/study to the rear which completes the first-floor plan.

Outdoor Space

A private south-facing garden extends from the rear of the house, bounded by a fence and raised planters. The space is laid with decking, which also runs along the side return, and is planted with eucalyptus, bay, jasmine and cherry blossom, providing a delightfully verdant setting. Alton Road forms the west side of a square of neighbouring homes on Downhills Park Road, Philip Lane and Clonmell Road; as such, the aspect from the garden is very peaceful and secluded, perfect for entertaining or alfresco dining.

The Area

Alton Road is well located for access to Downhills Park, which is five minutes walk to the west, with Lordship Recreation Ground a similar distance to the north.  On Tottenham High Road, Philip Lane and West Green Road, there are many independent shops, pubs and restaurants, including Sushi Heads, The Palm Pub, wine and cheese shop Wine & Rind, Beavertown Brewery, Perkyn’s Coffee and Craft Beer Shop and the Bernie Grant Arts Centre.

Turnpike Lane (Piccadilly Line) and Seven Sisters (Victoria Line and Overground) are both within easy reach by foot or bike, and Harringay Green Lanes is just over one mile to the south-west.
