Why this serene Hackney home sets the right tone for the new year

A clean start calls for serene interiors to inspire peace and productivity for the year ahead. With its gentle neutral tones and natural materials, there might not be a better place that encapsulates that fresh feeling than this two-bedroom maisonette in Hackney, east London, which came on the market earlier this week. Join us as we tour its calm corners, perfectly suited to new beginnings.

Located within walking distance to Dalston, London Fields and Clapton, as well as being only a short stroll away from the green expanses of Hackney Downs, this home has an envy-inducing east London address. Positioned on a quiet no-through road, its exterior is equally appealing, with a pitched roof that stands tall next to its terraced neighbours. Occupying the top two floors of the Victorian building, the maisonette can be further identified by the well-kept sash windows, its frames freshly painted black to pleasingly contrast with the white stucco and yellow stock-brick façade. If first impressions count, this home had us at “Hello” – but the real beauty lies within.

A soft, cohesive scheme has been employed throughout – from the cream bathroom lined with pretty pearlescent Moroccan zellige tiles to the kitchen, which has not only been painted the same shade but features the same tiles too. In fact, nearly every wall within the maisonette has been cast in the same colour, meaning segueing from one space to the next is seamless. Honey-hued parquet flooring runs underfoot in the kitchen, dining and living area, while old boards brimming with personality characterise the second storey.

This place might be pared back but it’s far from bland, thanks in part to the current owner’s curation of objects, furniture and art. We particularly like the series of canvas paintings – portraits in similar sizes and colour schemes – hanging harmoniously on walls in the hallway, living room and kitchen. There’s also plenty of framed photography and art in a variety of sizes to pore over too. Then there are lush leafy plants and a plethora of textiles – from shaggy piled rugs to chequered tablecloths – that prevent the cool space from feeling cold.

The pair of bedrooms upstairs are perhaps the most meditative places in the maisonette. Their nest-like position in the pitched roof mean they feel far from any noise below and have beautiful views above the rooftops and trees.
