How to support London restaurants right now

We’re supporting the community we have built through our food series, The Modern Menu, by sharing our guide to what the chefs and restaurants we love are doing in the face of social distancing measures. And, in cases of full closures, we’ve added recipes to make while you await their reopening. Restaurants are more than places to eat, they are fundamental spaces of social life and these actions to support London restaurants can ensure their survival. Plus, you’ll often be getting a meal out of it.

NB: All information below is correct as of 23 March 2020. As things are moving quickly, please check for revised and updated offerings on individual websites or Instagram accounts.

Bao

If there any silver linings to our favourite restaurants closing down its to see how quickly their creative and entrepreneurial thinking kicks in, as Bao proves with its launch of Rice Error, a new home delivery service. Stay tuned via their Instagram and newly-launched website for updates on when you can place your first order and to check out their menu for what you can expect, which, if ordering from the Borough branch, includes Erchen Chang’s prawn shia song rice with soy cured egg.

Brat

Chef Tomos Parry and the team at Michelin-starred Brat have launched Brat Farm, Grill and Wine Shop. A statement from the restaurant reads: “We will be continuing to support our network of small farmers, growers and fisherman, with a market stall full with boxes of fresh vegetables, a delicatessen selling prepared food such as grilled asparagus salad and house-made bread and a wine shop with a sommelier on hand to offer tips and recommendations. Tomos and the team will also be grilling whole crabs, fish and smoking potatoes for take-away and delivery.”

UPDATE: Tuesday 24 March: Brat Deli and Grill shop is now closed, but make sure to check their Instagram for updates. Tomos Parry’s grilled wild mushrooms with confit egg yolks and barley should tide you over for now.

Brawn

The Columbia Road restaurant is closed but are offering vouchers which can be used when they reopen. Hopefully that will be in time for summer, when Ed Wilson’s gazpacho will be bang-in season.

Jolene

Jolene on Newington Green had morphed into the ultimate neighbourhood grocer, selling bread and pastries to take away, for breakfast and lunch. But, they have now closed, with a post on their Instagram explaining: “Now that we have received clear signals from the men in charge we are “happy” to announce that we will operate a take away only service tomorrow from 9.30 till 5pm and will then close our doors for the foreseeable future. Stay safe, stay strong, use this time wisely and we shall see you when this is all over.” For now, be sure to check out chef David Gingell’s recipe for ricotta ravioli with sage butter

Lant Street Wine

It’s business as usual for our local wine shop, with collection in store and delivery both available. Jermaine Gallacher and Coco Bayley’s tips on drinking and having fun is advice we should all listen to right now.

Levan

Nicholas Balfe’s Salon, Levan and Larry’s are all closed in a move that prioritises the wellbeing of their staff and guests. Follow them on Instagram to show your support and check out Balfe’s recipe for sea trout crudo with peas, horseradish and ponzu.

Lyle's

Lyle’s in Shoreditch, as well as sister restaurant, bakery and coffee shop, Flor, in Borough, have closed for the time being. Why you await their reopening, try James Lowe’s recipe for whole roast turbot fennel and potatoes with bitter leaves and blood orange and send love on Instagram.

The Marksman

You needn’t forgo enjoying the best Sunday lunch in London, thanks to The Marksman’s take-out and delivery service. And it’s not just a whole roast chicken on offer, their signature buns, along with pies, bacon and sausage baps, sourdough bread, wines, beers and cocktails are available too. People in Hackney take note: support your local boozer!

UPDATE Tuesday 24 March: The Marksman has now stopped its takeout service. Their Instagram reads: “We have sadly come to the conclusion that we have no option but to stop all trading at The Marksman for the foreseeable future. This means an end to our brief time as a takeaway, bottle shop and provisions store. The takeaway pies were a hit so when we do reopen we will continue with those!” Check out our visit to Jon Rotheram and Tom Harris here for the time being.

Neal’s Yard Dairy

For now, Neal’s Yard Dairy stores in Borough, Covent Garden and Bermondsey remain open, with stocks of cheese, milk, bread, eggs, olive oil and other grocery items available. Phone ahead and they’ll have it ready for you to pick up. Their online shop is also still delivering across the UK, so read up on how to assemble a cheese board and get ordering.

Quality Chop House

All restaurants in the Woodhead Restaurant Group (Quality Chop House, Portland, Clipstone and Emilia) are closed. However, QCH’s food shop and deli remains open, and the restaurant is now running a daily collection and delivery service from Monday to Saturday. Take your pick from a menu comprised of family pies, ready meals, salad pots and deli treats.

Quo Vadis

Good grief. For the time being, the revolving doors of Quo Vadis will stand still, and we are closed for business. Circumstances are such that this is now the hard but the right thing for our staff and our guests. We wish that it wasn’t so. We’re prioritising our team, looking into interim measures and putting our all into being ship shape to welcome you back with an eel sandwich, Negroni and a smile just as soon as we can. Cheerio, but be back soon,” reads Quo Vadids’ Instagram page. Jeremy Lee’s fig and almond tart should tide you over ‘til then.

Rochelle Canteen

Both Rochelle Canteen’s Arnold Circus and ICA outposts are closed until further notice. But why not book the restaurant’s catering service for a post-pandemic event? In the meantime, cook Margot Henderson’s roast lamb and borlotti beans.

The River Café

The foremost Italian restaurant in London is closed until further notice but, from what we can tell, gift vouchers and hampers are still available. And there’s also The River Café’s many cookbooks, which last year included a 30-year anniversary edition featuring classic recipes that showcase the wonderful simplicity of Italian cooking.

While you wait for the Rive Café to reopen its doors, there’s always Ruth Roger’s roast grouse and porcini mushrooms to make at home.

Trullo

Trullo and its offshoot, Padella, are both closed. But you can still show support by buying their cookbook or a voucher towards a dinner at Trullo. Make Tim Siadatan’s broad bean and ricotta bruschetta as an act of solidarity until it reopens.
