Groves-Raines Architects

Groves-Raines Architects is dedicated to the conservation and sustainable re-use of historic buildings. Established in 1972, the practice has been at the forefront of conservation in Scotland and Ireland for over 40 years, with a broad portfolio of exceptional, award-winning projects.

Over the decades, Groves-Raines Architects has conserved and restored many of the UK’s finest period properties and buildings, bringing them new life and helping to secure their future, while building a number of notable new houses. The practice has particular experience in the adaptive re-use of historic buildings in a manner that authentically preserves and enhances the best of their character while adapting them to be perfectly suited for modern living. The team’s specialist skills in conservation planning and affinity for historic fabric ensure that their interventions are based on a deep understanding of a building’s heritage that allows the seamless integration of the old and the new.

The practice strives to achieve a balance between the best of conservation and a commitment to design excellence, whilst retaining respect for historical context and future sustainability. This commitment to excellence in design has seen the emergence of GRAS, a progressive design studio formed in 2006. GRAS is dedicated to creating extraordinary objects, spaces and places through the continual exploration of ideas, materials, techniques and technologies.

Groves-Raines Architects’ approach is one of commitment to working closely with their clients and consultants to produce the best architectural solutions which are deeply cognisant of environmental, historic, social and cultural context. A great deal of value is placed on the importance of fully integrating the design process, with each discipline informing the other in a culture of collective knowledge, shared vision and aligned goals to achieve excellent, lasting outcomes.

The Modern House Says
"Nicholas Groves-Raines and Kristin Hannesdottir are the real deal: architects who have lived and breathed their work for more than 50 years, saving Scotland's built heritage in their choice of homes as much as through their work for clients across the county."
