Five myths about The Modern House, debunked

Think we only sell homes worth millions, or aren’t interested in anything outside the M25? Think again. Here, we put to bed five of the most common misconceptions we hear about The Modern House.

1. You only sell homes worth over £1m
The one we hear most often! We represent homes of any value, with our current listings ranging from £285,000 to £20m, with everything in between.

What we do apply a discerning eye to, though, is design. So long as a home displays thoughtful and modern design, we will represent it. Good design, to us, can take the form of a bijou 1930s art deco apartment with views of the sea, or an ambitious overhaul to a Victorian house by an internationally renowned architect. Or it might just mean a one-bedroom flat lightly renovated and filled with thrift-store furniture and found objects.

2. You wouldn’t be interested in my house
Maybe you think because you live in a converted barn, a mews house or a period conversion, you wouldn’t be able to sell via The Modern house? Well, you might be glad to hear we have whole collections of homes for sale in these categories, and many more.

Our definition of what makes a house ‘modern’ is not the period of time it was built, but how the spaces are lived in today. We have Georgian and Victorian homes for sale, all of which have been configured for life in the 21st century, representing spaces that champion light, openness and contemporary design. We’ve even sold a couple of boats in our time.

3. You only sell homes in London
While it’s true we sell a fair number of homes in our home city, as a nation-wide agency we list homes up and down Britain, from the Isle of Skye to rural Carmarthenshire and the Cornish coast. Our appraisals team travel the length and breadth of the country to meet with owners and discuss their options.

And, unlike a local high street agency, our shopfront is our website, which connects the design-conscious public to the best homes for sale in the UK, no matter where they are in the world. Many of our buyers skip websites like Rightmove altogether and come straight to us for an edited roster of the best homes available.

4. You only sell homes by modernist architects
The Modern House takes its name from F. R. S. Yorke’s book of the same name, which introduced modernist architecture to the British public in 1934. As such, modernist design and architecture is part of our DNA. In fact, we’ve had the privilege of selling and safeguarding some of the most important examples of Britain’s modernist heritage by the likes of Walter Segal, Wells Coates and Berthold Lubetkin.

But you don’t need to own an architectural masterpiece to sell with The Modern House. In fact, many of the homes we sell don’t have an architect’s name attached to them at all. What matter to us is how these spaces have been adapted and reinterpreted for modern life.

5. My style is completely maximalist and way too flamboyant for you
Ok, it’s true, our audience’s tastes do lean more towards the less-is-more camp. But have you heard about our new project, Inigo?
