'An expansive 1930s art-deco apartment in Bexhill-on-Sea with far-reaching views'

This fantastic two-bedroom apartment is positioned on the third floor of Brookfield Court, a striking Art Deco apartment block designed by Hugh Hubbard Ford in 1935. The building is located in the celebrated seaside town of Bexhill-on sea, and has views of the Channel, as well as being a stones throw from the beach.

The building’s grand and sweeping exterior exemplifies the energy of the period and was designed to offer ‘all the conveniences of modern construction, comfort, light and air’.

This particular apartment is wonderfully lit by its many windows. Entry is via a hallway that runs along the centre of the plan, off which the kitchen, two bedrooms and a bathroom lie. At the far end of the plan, the living room has triple aspect windows and faces out towards the sea-front with views of the beach and beyond. The living room is large enough for a large dining table and at its centre is a wood-burning stove.

Both the kitchen and bathroom have been recently renovated and are laid with cork flooring. In the kitchen, the owners have lovingly restored original cabinetry and sensitively married them to subtle moderns hints of subdued off-white and Terrazzo tiling. Neutral tones are also present in the bathroom where touches of terrazzo are thoughtfully carried through. Originals doors have been retained throughout the apartment.

The two bedrooms are generously proportioned, with one currently used as a nursery. There is also access to a private solarium for residents via the south entrance.

Bexhill-on-Sea is one of Sussex’s most popular seaside towns. It is the home of the De-La-Warr Pavilion, one of Britain’s most celebrated Modern buildings. Built in 1935 by Erich Mendelsohn and Serge Chermayeff, the pavilion has been renovated and is now an internationally renowned arts centre with an impressive programme of exhibitions, performances and events. Hastings is close by, as is St Leonard’s-on-sea. The wider area’s rejuvenation is perhaps best punctuated by the additions of the Hastings Contemporary (previously the Jerwood Gallery) an initiative of HAT Projects which opened in 2012, and a new pier by dRMM which opened in 2016 and was awarded the 2017 Stirling Prize for architecture.

Bexhill train station is a seven-minute walk away where central London can be reached in under two hours.
