Spencer Courtyard is a collection of five contemporary homes in Finchley, designed by award-winning practice, Kennedy Twaddle.

The project has transformed a former merchant’s yard, into a private gated mews, comprising three single-storey houses and two apartments. The varying mass and volume of the Courtyard, characterised by angular pitched sedum roofs and intricate brickwork, establishes a dynamic visual dialogue celebrating materiality and craft, in a truly modern approach to living.

These semi-detached, two-bedroom houses are positioned towards the rear of the courtyard and incorporate private courtyards, beautiful double-pitched roofs with exposed eaves, handmade birch-ply kitchen units, oak parquet throughout and expansive sections of glazing, to aid the flow of light deep into their respective plans.

Internal accommodation extends to 754 sq ft and 713 sq ft, respectively and the two houses’ plans mirror each other. Access is gained via a private courtyard, delineated with intricate hit-and-miss brickwork. A wall of floor-to-ceiling lines the large open-plan kitchen, living and dining room; a space characterised by Spencer Courtyard’s signature pitched roofs. The height of these ceilings create a dramatic sense of volume and the exposed eaves, chime elegantly with the solid oak parquet which run throughout the houses. These spaces have bespoke, handmade kitchens with birch ply units.

Each of the two bedrooms have glazed doors which open, either directly onto the large courtyard at the front, or a smaller courtyard at the rear of each house.

Spencer Courtyard is tucked away behind Regents Park Road. The courtyard itself is accessed via private entrance and is gated. There is space for residents’ parking within the courtyard.

Regents Park Road is a lively thoroughfare, leading down towards Golders Green; it has a wide range of shops, pubs and cafes. Towards the station there is Tintico, an excellent cafe and coffee shop, seconds from the Tube. Stephens House and Gardens is a beautiful Grade ll-listed house, with extensive landscaped gardens, gifted to the public by Henry Charles ‘Inky’ Stephens of the Stephens’ Ink Company; the house also home to Inky’s Stables Cafe, a popular weekend brunch spot.

Spencer Courtyard is a seven-minute walk from Finchley Central tube station, which runs Northern Line services to central London in approximately 18 minutes.
