"An almost perfectly preserved example of a Modern Movement house” - English Heritage

This spectacular Grade-II Listed house, located in a quiet residential area in the coastal Devon town of Brixham, was built in 1935 to the designs of the architect Melville Aubin for Mr G. B. Jordain. Accommodation spans approximately 2,860 sqft arranged over three levels, with the second floor comprising a roof terrace with far-reaching views across the town to the Devon countryside.

Having remained in the same family for almost 80 years, much of the building’s architectural features and integrity remain intact, aided further by some excellent restorative work by the current owners. The house is highlighted as one of the finest properties in Devon by the eminent architectural historian Sir Nikolaus Pevsner in his celebrated ‘Buildings of England’ series.

The primary entrance, an elegant portico positioned at the front of the house, is accessible via a gated walkway through the walled garden. A beautifully light entrance hall with original timber panelling provides an impressive introduction to the ground level, with a solid parquet floor unifying the interior spaces.

Two generous reception rooms are positioned on the ground floor. To the immediate right of the plan is a light-filled living room with a wall of curved, Crittal bay windows spanning the front elevation and a decoratively tiled working fireplace providing the centrepiece. An adjacent dining room offers similar original details and a lovely aspect of the rear garden. The kitchen is generously proportioned, with an interconnected larder and store and a tiled alcove providing space for a cooker or Aga.

One of the most pleasing features in the house is a quite spectacular oak staircase, complete with polished chrome handrail and beautiful joinery details. A split-level landing leads to the first floor, home to three bedrooms, two of which are good-sized double rooms with further decorative fireplaces, Art Deco door handles and metal light fittings.

The third bedroom is smaller in size and there is also a small study on this level in addition to a bathroom and WC complete with original 1930’s fixtures, fittings and black-edged Vitrolite tiling. The second floor is given over to an expansive roof terrace and a small room with steel-framed glazing on each wall. This space was originally designed as a solarium but would befit a fourth bedroom or study. Although the house has seen significant structural and decorative improvement in recent years, some aspects of the interior will need some additional work and have been left to suit the taste of the new owners.

The property has two gardens. The rear walled garden is largely laid to lawn with a series of specimen trees and mature hedging providing privacy. Designated off-street parking is positioned to the side of the house, with ample space for several vehicles.

Brixham is an attractive and historic Devon harbour town. Still an active fishing port, the town is also renowned for its yacht club. Numerous beaches can be found along the nearby coast and there are plenty of stunning coastal walks in the area. There is a wide range of shops in Brixham, with the larger nearby towns of Paignton and Torquay offering further facilities. Paignton offers rail services to London Paddington (via Newton Abbot) with journey times of approximately three hours and ten minutes.
