'The aspiration was to enhance the existing townscape, provide an arrangement of spaces designed to maximise benefits of daylight and sunlight and... [to] encourage community interaction.' - AHMM

Signal Townhouse is a wonderful three-bedroom house, which sits at the end of a contemporary terrace, a stone’s throw from the river at Greenwich. The RIBA award-winning houses, designed by architects AHMM, are a contemporary reinvention of the residential Victorian houses in the surrounding streets. They deliberately prioritise both private and shared south-facing outdoor space as well as volume and large levels of natural light.

Entry to the house is through an electric gate, across the communal driveway and garden, and into a private paved granite courtyard with space for a table and chairs. A full-height front door leads straight into an open-plan kitchen and dining area and through into the living room. The kitchen has white silestone worktops and Miele appliances. Engineered-oak floors run underfoot – the house has underfloor heating throughout. Floor-to-ceiling aluminium bi-folding doors run the length of the sitting room, opening out onto the courtyard. There is also a downstairs guest WC.

A wooden staircase leads upstairs and is lit from above through a skylight which allows light to penetrate through the house. On the first floor are two generous double bedrooms, both of which have Juliette balconies. One of the bedrooms is currently being used as a light-filled study/spare room. The second bedroom has two large windows on the corner of the room, framing a brilliantly open view down the length of the adjacent street. A shared family bathroom has grey porcelain tiles on the walls and floor and a luxurious rain shower.

On the top floor is the master bedroom, with a walk-in wardrobe and en-suite shower room. There is also a large roof terrace with incredible views towards Greenwich and The Observatory.

The house has an off-street parking space, resident’s parking permits for the immediate area and bike storage. The houses are in a fantastic position particularly because of their proximity to the river Thames and its cycle path which leads to Greenwich village in one direction and North Greenwich and its underground station (Jubilee Line) to the other. Nearby there are many supermarkets and cafes; The River Cafe overlooks the river and is near to the infamous Cutty Sark pub. There is also a large Waitrose nearby in Greenwich and a Sainsbury’s local a stone’s throw from the house.

A short bus ride or walk away is North Greenwich or The Greenwich Peninsula, which is a new ‘island’ community in the loop of the Thames, with the O2 at its apex and Canary Wharf across the river. Private residences are set amid 48 acres of parkland and hidden gardens, surrounded on three sides by water. The underground station, water taxi, cable car and City Airport provide outstanding transport connections. Maze Hill station is 15 minutes away, with trains to St. Pancras, Blackfriars and London Bridge. There are many good schools in the area too, including the Meridian Primary School which is a short cycle from Attwood Lane, along the river.
