“Defined by angular geometry”
This studio apartment in a former Victorian ice storage warehouse is meticulously executed in the brutalist style. Materials throughout reflect the dock’s industrial history, and exposed concrete ceilings and stainless steel worktops retain the building’s character. With Crittall-glazed doors that open out onto decking overlooking the Thames, the home lends itself to a unique and sought-after riverside lifestyle.
The Building
Ransome’s Dock was essential to Battersea’s provenance as an industrial hub for London’s food supplies from the 1880s-1900. The ice factory stood next to a dairy and a steam bakery. Its façade is of Victorian brick and is topped with lofty iron and glass lantern roofs.
The Tour
Positioned on the ground floor of Ransome’s Dock, entry is via the walkway into the open kitchen/living space which draws easterly light from the extensive glazing on the riverside wall. Defined by its angular geometry, concrete beams run the length of the ceiling. Tiered stainless steel worktops, brass taps and cabinetry create functional areas for cooking and entertaining. Narrow strips of dark timber flooring run underfoot.
A glazed Crittall-style partition defines an expansive bedroom area, softened with white-painted walls and built-in wardrobes. Hanging clear red pendants extend by each bedside, illuminating the space with Memphis energy. The bedroom has en suite access to the bathroom, where modern grey tiles line the floor and an impressive walk-in shower.
Outdoor Space
A kilometre-long walkway runs between the warehouse and the River Thames, abutted by the apartment’s lovely decked terrace. Within the warehouse’s estate is a lake flanked by Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore sculptures.
Area Guide
Just a three-minute walk from Albert Bridge, Ransome’s Dock is within easy reach of the shops and restaurants of the King’s Road and Chelsea. More immediate are the amenities of Parkgate Road with District coffee and wine bar and the gourmet grocer Bayley and Sage. Notable pubs include The Prince Albert. Nearby is Battersea Square, a pedestrianized piazza where a cluster of restaurants, tea rooms and bakeries can be found, including an outpost of Gails.
Battersea Power Station, home to an excellent array of high-end shops, restaurants, and a cinema is a 9-minute cycle through Battersea Park.
Spanning 200 acres, the exquisite green space of Battersea Park is a three-minute walk from the home. Laid out between 1854 and 1870 and Grade II*-listed, the park has an extensive frontage and a riverside promenade to the Thames. It’s made up of a wonderful assemblage of gardens, sprawling lawns, a boating lake, a children’s Zoo, the Pump House gallery, and sports facilities. The Pear Tree Cafe is set beside the lake and offers vibrant evenings of live music, with food by ex-Petersham Nurseries alumni Annabel Partridge and Will Burrett. The recently renovated RCA complex designed by Herzog & de Meuron is also nearby.
Battersea Power Station’s underground provides quick links to central London via the Northern line. Battersea Park and Queenstown Road are closest to Southern Rail and Overground links, and Clapham Junction is also close by. Along with a great network of immediate local buses, some offering a very quick route to South Kensington, buses run regularly to Victoria station from Cadogan Pier, just across Albert Bridge. The Thames Clipper Uber Boat runs down the Thames from the pier to the City and Canary Wharf to the East.
