“Parkham Wood House is widely considered to be Seal’s finest work for its combination of ingenious structural design and daring decorative style.”

Spectacularly situated above Brixham with wonderful sea views, Parkham Wood House was designed by the innovative Devon-based architect Mervyn Seal in 1960. This exhilarating three-bedroom house, built high across a cliff face with extensive glazing and distinctive ‘Butterfly’ profile, is one of a small collection of similar houses designed by Seal in the Torbay area.

The house was listed Grade II in 2009 in recognition of its outstanding exterior form and original interiors. Timber-clad ceilings, bespoke shelving and open-tread staircases are also among the many engaging features of the house. There is, however, still considerable scope for updating the interior in a sympathetic manner.

Recently described by the 20th Century Society as “a remarkable achievement”, Parkham Wood House is widely considered to be Seal’s finest work for its combination of ingenious structural design and daring decorative style.

The house is accessed via a steep drive to a newly-reconstructed parking area that stands prominently in front of the house, and provides space for a number of cars. There is an open double car port beneath the house sheltered by an attractive cantilevered roof. Main access is around the side, whilst a wonderful staircase leads from the drive to the impressive balcony that is affixed to the building’s front. Original timber-framed sliding doors open from the balcony to the soaring lateral living space.

As well as a sunken sitting room, there is a raised dining area and separate kitchen, and a single flight of open-tread stairs that leads to a succession of three bedrooms. The first bedroom has a large gallery window that permits a wonderful view of the living space below.

The elevated position of the house allows for far reaching panoramic views across the town, the picturesque harbour and the sea beyond. A private garden above the house offers an even better vantage point.

The house is in the centre of Brixham, an attractive and historic Devon harbour town along the south coast. Still an active fishing port, the town is also renowned for its yacht club. Numerous beaches can be found along the coast and there are plenty of stunning coastal walks in the area. There is a wide range of shops in Brixham, with the larger towns of Paignton and Torquay offering further facilities.

Please note that all areas, measurements and distances given in these particulars are approximate and rounded. The text, photographs and floor plans are for general guidance only. The Modern House has not tested any services, appliances or specific fittings — prospective purchasers are advised to inspect the property themselves. All fixtures, fittings and furniture not specifically itemised within these particulars are deemed removable by the vendor.
