Architect: AR Design Studio
Occupying an enviable location overlooking the River Hamble from an elevated position on the hill, this four/five-bedroom house was designed by award-winning architect Andy Ramus of AR Design Studio. Completed in 2009, the house was shortlisted for the RIBA ‘Downland Prize’ the following year.
Crowsport is a private estate, established in the 1930s by Sir Thomas Lipton, that runs down to the Port Hamble marina and contains a collection of detached modernist and modernist-style houses. Amongst the original houses there are a number of contemporary builds that are designed to be in-keeping with the modernist image of the estate, which is now a designated Conservation Area.
The house sits at the highest point of the estate, offering the best views from its raised corner plot. Surrounded by a simple garden, the house is approached from the rear and entered at ground level. In order to maximise the views, accommodation is inverted, with four bedrooms and a large reception room on the ground floor, and a fantastically bright open-plan living space on the upper level.
The bedrooms are arranged on either side of a central hallway, each with a view of the surrounding garden. The reception room – originally designed as the master bedroom – and one of the larger bedrooms have sliding doors that open to Juliet balconies that greet the morning sun. Also at ground level there is a utility room.
The open-tread staircase emerges centrally to the upper level, flanked by glass balustrades and topped by an impressive skylight. To one side is a seating area, and on the other a kitchen and dining space. Both sides have east-facing balconies with views of the river.
The interiors are deliberately minimal, taking on a referential form that echoes the bold shapes of the exterior. The flat-roofed structure is white-rendered with purposeful cantilevered overhangs, simple exposed structural uprights and clean-lined shapes that draw influence from the modernist and Bauhaus eras.
Hamble-le-Rice is an idyllic town on the banks of the River Hamble, a tributary with a wide estuary that runs into Southampton Water and the Solent beyond. Now a popular yachting destination, there is an active marina and a number of yacht clubs along the waterfront. The centre of Southampton is around 20 minutes by car, for an excellent selection of shops and fast connections to London. Journey time from Southampton to London Waterloo is around an hour and 20 minutes, or two hours from Hamble station via Fareham.
