“A dramatic open-plan hall with soaring cathedral ceilings, exposed trusses and light from every direction”

This wonderful former chapel lies on Gunter Grove, just minutes away from the many boutiques, restaurants and bars of Chelsea; with Fulham Road to its north and King’s Road to its south. Following periods of use as a recording studio for artists including The Rolling Stones, the voluminous space was converted for residential use and is now a light-filled three-bedroom house with over 2,200 sq ft of internal space, a small courtyard garden and a private terrace.

The Tour

The house rests behind a gated front garden and has an impressive trio of stained glass windows that rise above the foliage and entrance porch. This opens to a dramatic open-plan hall with soaring cathedral ceilings and exposed trusses. High-set windows pour light into the space from every direction, as do the glazed doors that open to a compact courtyard garden in the south-eastern corner.

In the centre of the room, an open fireplace is recessed within a panelled nook and the living space arranged around it. The kitchen is set behind this area, partly obscured from the view of the open reception. It is lit from above by a roof light and has stainless steel worktops and a range cooker. Directly opposite is a utility room; there is also a guest WC on the rear landing. Beautiful parquet flooring extends throughout, with underflooring heating in every room.

A set of floating, open-tread timber stairs ascends to the upper level, which is occupied by the fantastic main bedroom suite. Parquet flooring leads into the bedroom and continues into the dressing room, which contains bespoke rosewood cabinetry. Glazed doors open from the bedroom to a paved, south-east-facing terrace. The bathroom employs a timeless palette of Carrara marble and white tiling, while Arabic window screens with swirling shark motifs cast an ever-changing pattern of light on their surfaces. There are two further double bedrooms on the lower-ground level, both with en suite bath or shower rooms and built-in rosewood wardrobes.

An integrated speaker system is present throughout and the whole house is triple glazed. A secure underground garage, with a forecourt for an extra vehicle, is positioned just opposite the house and is available by separate negotiation.

The Area

Gunter Grove is brilliantly positioned for all that Chelsea has to offer. The King’s Road, with its excellent selection of shops, restaurants and bars, is a few minutes walk away. Sloane Square, the Royal Court Theatre and the Serpentine Gallery are close by, along with Battersea Park and Chelsea Physic Garden. At the end of the road is Lots Road, famous for its weekly auctions of both antique and contemporary items. Westfield Park is seconds from the house, a great place for a stroll and complete with a playground. Nearby, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show is held annually in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea on the Chelsea Embankment.

Sloane Square and South Kensington Underground stations run District, Circle and Piccadilly Line services. The A4 provides quick access by car to Heathrow Airport (approximately 35 minutes), and the southwest of England.
