“An elegant Victorian apartment within striking distance of leafy Ruskin Park”

Set on a quiet residential street in Camberwell, backing onto leafy Ruskin Park, is this bright one-bedroom apartment. The current owners have thoughtfully reimagined the interiors, employing a contemporary palette of honest materials, such as exposed brick and wooden floors. These are set in contrast to the building’s Victorian features, including sash windows and high ceilings, resulting in a series of striking spaces with a wonderful sense of flow and character.

The Tour

The apartment is part of a row of Victorian terraces built in 1890. Great care has been taken to preserve the exterior of the building, including recently repointed brickwork.

Situated on the first floor, the apartment is accessed by its own staircase, complete with an original bannister, located off a shared hallway. The most impressive space in the apartment is the dual-aspect kitchen, living and dining room, which is open-plan and possesses excellent levels of light. At the front are two sash windows, in keeping with the building’s Victorian frontage overlooking Finsen Road.  At the rear, a vast window overlooks the neighbouring gardens, drawing sunlight into the kitchen. Pine flooring provides a visual continuity across the expansive room. The current owners have worked sensitively with the characterful space to reinstate period features, nodding to the apartment’s late 19th-century heritage.

At the heart of the living room, a wonderfully ornate fireplace is complemented by a custom-made hearth composed of Italian slate. In the kitchen, the London stock on the brick chimney breast and fireplace have been exposed, its hearth lined with Claybrooks handmade terracotta tiles. Calming tones of ‘Calluna’ by Farrow and Ball adorn the kitchen units alongside bespoke open shelving. A playful series of monochrome tiles line the kitchen wall and act as a splashback. Conveniently, there is plenty of storage, care of a large bookshelf in the living room, crafted to fit the space by a local carpenter.

The light and airy bedroom is set at the rear of the apartment, where a large window frames the surrounding gardens. A wool blend loop carpet has recently been laid, and fitted blinds have been introduced throughout. Located between the living areas and bedroom is a modern bathroom fitted with hexagonal Mosaic floor tiles by Ca’ Pietra.

The Victorian terraces along Finsen Road run parallel to open expanses of nearby Ruskin Park. Also, a short walk away is much-loved Myatt’s Field Park, which has a bandstand, summerhouse, and café, as well as tennis courts, a children’s playground and a community greenhouse.
