"A pair of studios, re-imagined as a contemporary mews house, with planning permission for a Hugh Strange-designed extension."

This wonderful three-bedroom mews house is located on Coningham Mews, a quiet cobbled mews near Shepherd’s Bush. The house was originally designed by the artist Leonard Hessing as a pair of studios for a painter/architect and a ceramicist. While it bears many of the hallmarks of mid-century design, the house will require some updating.

The traditional mews-style exterior is formed of a bright white facade, complemented by a beautiful mature wisteria. Internally, accommodation is arranged across two floors. The ground floor was custom built for Hessing’s wife, the studio potter Judy Trim. Trim was taught by Howard Hodgkin and developed a practice concerned with what she described as the Bauhaus ethic in drawing and painting. As such, Hessing arranged this portion of the house to accommodate two full-size kilns and an office space for sketching.

Hessing, an abstract painter, originally reserved the first floor for his own artistic and architectural pursuits. He positioned his easels and planning draws beneath large full-height glazing, to draw wonderful levels of natural light across the entirety of the floor. The upper storey is comprised of a large open-plan living room and kitchen, flooded in natural light by a beautiful row of angled frosted windows which stretch to the apex of the roof’s pitch. Exposed RSJs frame the two rows of glazing and delineate the sunken kitchen tier from the partially elevated studio.

Bespoke modular furniture has been designed for each room, creating a series of versatile spaces around architect’s plan chests, mezzanine storage spaces and elevated sleeping quarters.

The house comes with approved planning permission for an extension, which will add a mezzanine floor and roof terrace, designed by RIBA award-winning practice Hugh Strange Architects.

Coningham Mews is a short walk from the shops, restaurants and bars of Shepherd’s Bush Green. The area is also home to one of London’s Westfield centres. The recently renovated Television Centre is at the centre of an exciting regeneration in nearby Wood Green. Independent restaurants such as Kricket have opened in recent years, along with a cinema and the new Soho House members’ club, White City House. Also nearby is White City Place, a creative campus with restaurants, shops and museums, and the RCA’s Schools of Communication, Humanities, and Architecture.

Public transport links are accessed via Shepherds Bush (Central line, Southern Rail, London Overground and bus station) and Goldhawk Road (Circle and Hammersmith & City lines).
