"The beautiful woodblock floor uses materials reclaimed from an 18th-century French chateau."

Chester Road is a smart row of Victorian terraced houses within the Dartmouth Park Conservation Area that gently slopes downwards towards Highgate Cemetery and Hampstead Heath. This four-bedroom house has been elegantly remodelled to a design by the Paris-based design studio AMOS, with a rear extension bringing internal accommodation to over 2,000 square feet. Inside, a considered use of colour perfectly marries the old and the new.

Working within the elegant proportions of the Victorian house, each room has been re-thought in response to a modern way of living. On the ground floor is a warm and welcoming living room fronted by a bay window, and a study with glass panelling that opens it to the hallway.

As part of the re-design, the beautifully swirling staircase was reversed to create a wide hallway while making the stairs more accessible to the inside of the house. This was rebuilt by hand using warm-hued walnut, and was the brainchild of the French architect who oversaw the project and was more accustomed to the flexibility of Parisian apartments than formal London townhouses.

Beyond this is a light-filled open-plan kitchen and dining room that leads through huge sliding doors to the garden. This wonderfully private space is enclosed by a wall and was designed and planted by Chelsea silver medallist Annie Evans with clematis, climbing roses, hydrangeas and small flowering trees.

Inside, a beautiful woodblock floor using materials reclaimed from an 18th-century French chateau was laid by eye in a neat herringbone pattern, and runs throughout the ground floor. This room is painted a warm dusty pink from the skirtings to the skylights. A bold use of colour has been applied in striking ways throughout; navy on the underside of the staircase and the ceiling above it, forest and moss green cabinetry and a soothing blue-grey master bedroom.

There are three bedrooms on the first floor, one of which is currently used as a study, along with the family bathroom. As part of the total restoration of the house, the two adjacent bedrooms at the front were re-designed to be perfectly equal in size so as to maintain harmony between the current owner’s children. One is currently used as a playroom.

At the top of the house is the master bedroom, with views over the gardens and rooftops perfectly framed by large sliding windows that open the room to the sky. The en suite is open-plan and finished in marble.

The house is well-situated in Dartmouth Park, within easy walking distance of Hampstead Heath, Parliament Hill Lido and the swimming ponds, as well as Highgate Cemetery, Waterlow Park and the amenities of Highgate Village.

There is an excellent café called Cricks Corner at the top of Chester Road, and several popular gastro pubs including St John’s Tavern, the Bull & Last, the Flask, the Lord Palmerston and the Southampton Arms are nearby.

Tufnell Park Underground station (Northern Line) is a ten minute walk away, while Gospel Oak and Upper Holloway stations provide access to the Overground service.
