“Large glass doors open directly from the open-plan living area to the expansive garden”

This four-bedroom house lies in the village of Lower Chapel, a peaceful, secluded spot near Brecon. One of six houses designed by local architect Samuel Organ in 2007, the house has a striking pitched timber structure, which sits harmoniously within the surrounding verdant landscape. A sense of volume and light pervades the interior, which has been impeccably executed by the current owners and is perfectly considered for a modern way of living. An expansive lawn extends in front of the house, accessed via the open-plan living area.

The Tour

The house lies at the end of a private communal driveway, which provides access to the group of six houses. Each house has two allocated parking spaces, plus plenty of space for visitors. It has a striking timber frame design, and is extremely well insulated; heating is provided by an ICE Energy ground source heat pump, which works through an underfloor heating system that runs throughout the house (with the exception of the winter garden). All of the windows are double glazed, as are the folding doors that divide the living area and the indoor garden.

The open-plan living space is the heart of the home, encompassing a kitchen, dining area and living room, as well as an indoor garden. Grey ceramic flooring runs underfoot and a wood-burning stove lies at the centre of the space, providing a natural focal point to the room. Large glass doors open directly from the living area to timber decking that leads to the expansive garden.

A kitchen island delineates the cooking area from the living/dining room. The kitchen has a generous provision of storage, a built-in extractor fan and integrated appliances. The dining area is located between the kitchen and living room, opposite which a utility room and a small office can be found. To the left-hand side of the plan, there is a wonderful indoor garden that can be accessed via glass folding doors; this sits underneath a mono-pitched section of the roof and has an entirely glass front, which lets in plenty of natural light and frames views onto a decked section of the terrace.

Upstairs, wooden floorboards connect the four bedrooms, one of which is currently used as an office. All of the spaces are brilliantly bright and have copious amounts of storage. The main bedroom sits within the roof’s pitch so has beautiful views onto the gardens below. Both the en suite and the second bathrooms are smart, contemporary spaces with dark grey ceramic floors. The two smaller bedrooms overlook the ground floor below through a row of internal windows. Loft storage can be accessed from this level.

Outdoor Space

An expansive lawn unfurls in front of the house, accessed via doors that open from the living area onto a small decked section of terrace. The borders have been carefully planted with a variety of bushes and shrubs, creating a peaceful haven that offers opportunities for relaxing, sunbathing, dining and playing. There is also a large shed that provides plenty of storage space.

The Area

Cae Pentre is situated in the beautiful area of Brecon, in a village near the edge of the Brecon National Park. Lower Chapel has a handsome church, which is seconds away from the house, and a recently renovated village hall. Amenities can be found in Brecon, which is a 10-minute drive away, including supermarkets, shops, a leisure centre with a swimming pool and a theatre. There is also a hospital, a library and a museum and art gallery.

Hay-on-Wye lies 20 miles west of the house; a lively town on the River Wye famed for its many bookshops and the revered literary event the Hay Festival or, as it’s been coined, ‘the Woodstock of the mind’. There are plenty of wonderful walks that can be accessed directly from the house which is within easy reach of the Brecon Beacons, the Black Mountains and the River Wye, so plenty of outdoor adventures can be found nearby.

The nearest train station is in Abergavenny, with services north to Manchester and south to Cardiff and Newport, with connections to London and the South West. Newport offers services to London in less than two hours.
