"An ingeniously designed set of spaces, which fluently adapt and respond to the demands of modern life."

This cleverly conceived two-bedroom apartment is situated on Bartholomew Square, a quiet residential street peacefully tucked between Old Street and Clerkenwell, set amidst some of the capital’s most striking contemporary buildings.

The apartment has been entirely re-configured and re-designed by Mike Stoner and James King. The result is a flexible set of living spaces, designed to respond to the demands of contemporary living. High ceilings emphasise the sense of volume, while pocket doors have been used throughout to allow the rooms to be opened up or closed away. Bespoke carpentry in oak and birch ply throughout has been designed and handmade by Mike Stoner. Each door, storage solution and fitting has been designed in consideration to its surroundings, creating a wonderful sense of adaptability.

Internally, James King and Mike Stoner have sought to open the plan to maximise flow of light and life through the spaces. Entry is gained at ground level. Beyond the front door, the apartment opens out onto a generous entrance hall and set of communal spaces, comprised of an open-plan living and dining room. These areas have Senso organic poured resin floors and form the centre of the apartment; all other rooms lead off them and include a family bathroom with Japanese bath and sunken dot ‘Pico’ tiles by Mutina, a kitchen which provides access to a private rear courtyard, a master bedroom with en-suite shower room and plenty of bespoke wardrobe and storage space, as well as a second bedroom which can be configured as an office through the use of a bespoke fold-out bed and built in desk.

Sliding pocket doors are fitted throughout the apartment and perfectly embody King and Stoner’s meticulous attention to detail. These doors allow elements of each room to be concealed, thus changing the use of the space and subtly altering the nature of the apartment itself. The living room’s wall mounted television can be concealed with a sliding panel, which also partitions the second bedroom if privacy is required. Alternatively, a second doorway to this space allows the room to be used as an open extension of the communal spaces, drawing natural deep into the plan. A handmade ladder has been designed to assist with access to some of the higher storage spaces as well as a utility cupboard with bespoke drying rack.

The private courtyard, at the rear of the apartment, is a quiet secluded space with a beautiful mural by artist Mela Yerka. It is a largely paved space with some planting and shrubs, which backs onto the mature London plane trees of Radnor Park.

The apartment is conveniently situated between Old Street and Clerkenwell on a quiet residential street, flanked on three sides by green space, including St Luke’s Garden, Radnor Park and a Bartholomew Square itself, a small green directly opposite.

Nearby Whitecross Street is home to an excellent street-food market, open for lunch on weekdays. Other local amenities include Exmouth Market, Shoreditch and Hoxton, with their excellent restaurants and nightlife; there is also proximity to more cerebral entertainments, neighbouring St Luke’s is currently home to the London Symphony Orchestra and the Barbican theatre and cinemas are within ten-minutes’ walk. The rapidly developing Old Street ‘Silicon’ Roundabout is five minutes away and London’s financial district is a short walk to the south.

The stations of Old Street (Northern line), Barbican (Metropolitan line) and Farringdon (Thameslink, Metropolitan, Circle, and Hammersmith and City lines) are all a short walk away.
