"The house was lovingly converted by architect Jeffrey James using a palette of raw and unfinished materials"

Situated on a characterful cobbled mews a short walk from the heart of Dalston, is this beautifully renovated two-bedroom house. Architect Jeffrey James has embraced the capacious proportions of the Victorian industrial building and transformed its light-filled interiors to create a series of thoughtful and minimal contemporary living spaces. There is a large west-facing terrace on the second floor, allowing wide views over the rooftops from the adjacent bedroom.

Atlas Mews is a secluded gated street, engendering a quiet sense of retreat in this much-loved corner of east London. Built circa 1905, the mews has a history of light industrial use, supposedly used as stables for police horses, and later home to small factories. Its buildings have been thoughtfully restored by resident artists and creatives since the 1980s, retaining and restoring the original character of the buildings and fostering a warm sense of community while doing so.

This house was lovingly converted by architect Jeffrey James using a palette of raw and unfinished materials throughout to chime with well-considered contemporary additions. There are original Crittal windows on the front facade, that draw in incredible amounts of natural light into the voluminous rooms.

The interior plan is arranged over three levels, connected with a striking spiral steel staircase. The ground floor is currently used as a separate studio apartment with a huge bedroom/living space, and adjacent kitchenette and bathroom. The décor is wonderfully simple, with white-painted brick walls and floors that both emphasise the room’s volume and create a serene sense of calm.

The first floor is elegantly arranged with an open-plan kitchen that runs along one length of the room without impeding the flow of the living spaces. A concrete worktop sits sculpturally above steel cabinets, bathed in light from the windows above. Warm-hued original floorboards run underfoot. The room is dual aspect, with a pair of tall windows, one with a Juliet balcony, that face east for morning light.

On the second floor are the bedroom and family bathroom. This level of the house is finished with bare plaster walls and there are large bespoke wardrobes. The bedroom can be opened fully to the terrace, with handsome metal-framed floor-to-ceiling sliding doors. There is also access to the roof from this level.

The mews has off-street parking spaces for residents. At the rear of the house, there is a corrugated steel workshop and storage space.

Atlas Mews lies just off Dalston Lane and is a short walk from Dalston Junction and Hackney Central station, for services to Highbury & Islington, Shoreditch High Street and Canada Water on the East London Overground Line. Regular services run from Hackney Downs station to Liverpool Street.

The apartment is positioned for the best of east London, with the green spaces of Hackney Downs, London Fields (with its Lido and access to Broadway Market) and Clissold Park all close at hand, while the wild open spaces of Hackney & Walthamstow Marshes are a little further afield. This part of east London is well known for its exciting food scene, with a wonderful range of bars, restaurants and cafes.
