This wonderfully refined loft apartment is located on the second floor of a converted warehouse within a short walk of Liverpool Street, Spitalfields and the City.

Access is provided by an industrial-style lift. There is almost 1,200 sq ft of flexible accommodation, currently configured with one bedroom, a large study, an open-plan kitchen / dining room, a reception room and two bathrooms.

The apartment was converted in 1996 by the architect Rosamund Diamond, now of Diamond Architects, for a professor of fine art. It retains much of the character of the original building, with bare brick walls, timber floorboards, iron columns, loading doors and an old hoist mechanism.

The flat was designed with layers of rooms as private spaces to retreat (the bedroom and study), and more open living spaces for entertaining, with huge amounts of natural light admitted via warehouse windows.

New insertions, constructed from smooth sheets of MDF and based on a regular grid, give the apartment a sense of understated regularity. A capsule has been placed in the centre of the flat to contain the two bathrooms and storage space. Cutting through it is what the architects call a ‘dressing corridor’ – a long gallery of doors concealing wardrobes, services and the shower.

Daylight is filtered through to the depths of the apartment using clear and obscured glazed screens. The open kitchen wall acts as a divider between the apartment’s expansive living space and the internal study, providing the latter with subtle daylight and a street view. The project was admired in the architectural press when it was completed, and featured in the magazine RIBA Interiors, among others.

Middlesex Street is on the doorstep of the City. Liverpool Street station (Central Line, Circle Line, Metropolitan Line, National Rail and Stansted Express) is a short walk away. Petticoat Lane Market, and the amenities of Spitalfields and Shoreditch, are within easy reach.
