This remarkable house, designed by the architect Paul Jenkins of place for his own occupation and built in 2008, can be found in the historic village of Longstock in Hampshire’s picturesque Test Valley.

Jenkins’s accomplished design for the house embraces the glorious landscaped walled gardens that surround it, with expansive full-height glazing and the ability to slide open many of the glass doors.

Accommodation includes three / four bedrooms (the current owners have a second reception room that could be used as a fourth bedroom) and a wonderful open-plan kitchen / living / dining room. The bedrooms on the first floor all enjoy soaring ceilings (and indeed could have mezzanine levels added). For a full outline of the accommodation, see the floorplan.

Aside from the main house there is a car port and workshop area at one end of the site. There is parking space at the rear of the garden with access via the Peat Spade Inn car park.

The gardens, also designed by Jenkins, are a significant attraction of the property and incorporate a pond and a south facing terrace as well as a level lawn and granite paving. The original 19th century wall borders much of the garden with a striking gabion wall bordering one side.

Jenkins has integrated numerous sustainable elements into the house, including an underfloor heating system throughout supplied by a Veissman ground source heat pump.

The craftsmen and materials used for the building were sourced from as nearby as possible, most notably the local sweet chestnut that clads much of the exterior. The principle exception is the cross-laminated timber panels, imported from Switzerland, that form a large part of the construction (Jenkins was inspired to use wood for his home by the 15th century thatched timber frame house that sits opposite the site).

The house is located centrally in what is a small, attractive village which is designated as a conservation area and contains many listed buildings. The gardens borders on land that is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and overlooks a scheduled ancient monument – a former Viking dock – meaning that the area is incredibly well protected against intrusive development.

Longstock sits on the southern edge of the Leckford Estate, a 4,000 acre corner of Hampshire owned and farmed by Waitrose. The Estate’s renowned farm shop, café and a nursery is a pleasant walk from the house.

Longstock is home to the Peat Spade Inn, one of the most celebrated pubs in Hampshire, and is also well known for Longstock House, the former home of John Spedan Lewis that regularly opens its renowned water gardens and arboretum to the public.

The beautiful Test Valley is widely considered the best place in England for trout fishing, thanks to its clear chalk springs. The town of Stockbridge, 1.5 miles to the south, is a popular market town with an impressive range of shops, galleries, delicatessens, pubs and restaurants. There is also a good secondary school at the Stockbridge end of the village.

The cathedral cities of Winchester and Salisbury together with Romsey and Andover are within reasonable driving distances and there are regular train services from Winchester, Micheldever Station, Grateley and Andover on the Waterloo line (Micheldever, perhaps the most practical station to use from Longstock, runs services to London in approximately one hour). The A303, 5 miles, to the north provides excellent road communication to the West Country and to London via the M3 motorway and the A34 for links to the north and the south coast.
