"Peter Shepheard's taste for Modern Movement curves, combines beautifully with large sections of glazing and thoughtful communal planting"

This wonderful two-bedroom terrace house forms part of Camden Studios, an award-winning complex of purpose-built artists’ studios, designed in 1966 by Sir Peter Shepheard for St Pancras Council. The studios are secluded behind a gated entrance and are arranged around a beautiful communal garden and courtyard.

This particular house sits on the northern side of the communal gardens and has been the subject of a sensitive renovation in recent years. An expansive open-plan living and dining room occupies the majority of the ground floor. There are inlaid parquet floors underfoot, a wall of large-scale wood-framed glazing looking out onto a private courtyard, and dramatic double-height ceilings above.

A contemporary kitchen has been recently installed with yellow ceramic tiles (handmade to a 1960s design), integrated appliances by Siemans, Liebherr and Miele, as well as a bespoke wall of discrete storage space adjoining the dining area. An original wooden, open-tread staircase leads upstairs to the bedrooms.

A dramatically curved first-floor wall, beautifully exhibits Shepheard’s taste for the streamlined silhouettes of Modern Movement architecture; the curve also acts as a balustrade. A second bedroom, currently used as study, occupies the space to one side of the staircase; it has a liner strip of high windows and skylights, with solar-powered blinds, drawing in wonderful levels of natural light. There are five solar panels on the roof of the studio, allowing for the offset of electricity usage.

The master bedroom is positioned behind the study, overlooking the communal gardens at the front of the studios. It has a mono-pitched roof, built-in storage space and original parquet floors. A family bathroom is positioned opposite, with elegant powder-green tiles.

Camden Studios is an artists’ community, currently comprising 10 studios, which are occupied by a mixture of private and council residents. The studios have a rich cultural and architectural history and have been home over the years to many artists, including sculptor Peter László Peri, designer Peggy Angus and the Surrealist artist Richard Niman.

The studios were designed by Sir Peter Shepheard, early in his career, for the Greater London Council. Shepheard was a proponent of modest Modernist architectural principles. The Guardian remarked on his death in 2002, that his work was always “thoughtfully designed, and executed with the sort of loving care that evoked a positive response from the people who lived there.”

The scheme was awarded a Housing Design Medal in 1968, citing the its, “consistently high and unpretentious quality and outwards appearance… the blocks themselves are knit together to provide a scheme of great character and sense of identity.”

The Regent’s Park, one of London’s most beautiful green spaces, is within walking distance and has a boating lake, as well as numerous cafes, sports facilities and ornamental gardens.

The recently completed Kings Cross regeneration, including Granary Square and Coal Drops Yard, is positioned on the other side of the Regent’s Canal, approximately 15 minutes’ walk from the studios. Alongside existing outposts of Caravan coffee roasters, Waitrose, Dishoom, and audiophile bar Spiritland, the Thomas Heatherwick-designed Coal Drops Yard has brought Margaret Howell, Tom Dixon and Aesop stores to the canal.

The studios are positioned just off Camden Street, about five minutes’ walk from Mornington Crescent Tube station r. Kings Cross station is a 15 minute walk away and provides connections nationwide and is served by Hammersmith and City, Circle, Victoria, Northern, Piccadilly and Metropolitan tube lines, while St Pancras International station provides Eurostar connections to Paris and Brussels.
