This three-bedroom house in the historic village of Langley, Kent, was designed in the early 1970s by the architect Patrick O’Keefe. It is an excellent example of Mid-Century Modern architecture, featuring large picture windows that flood the living room with light and offer fantastic views over the surrounding open countryside.

The first floor features an open-plan living/dining room, with wood burner, a kitchen, three bedrooms and a shower room. Downstairs accommodation includes a study, large utility room and large garage. A short driveway provides parking space for multiple cars.  The building sits centrally within the generous plot and is surrounded by attractive gardens, mature hedges and trees that create a sense of seclusion.

The house has been very well refurbished and maintained by the current owners, paying great attention to repairs to the exteriors. There is plenty of scope to extend accommodation by converting the garage and/or filling in the existing car port beneath the house. Fully drawn architectural plans for such work exist.

Patrick O’Keefe is an architect who is perhaps best known for his ecclesiastical architecture, most notably his outstanding design for Christ Church at Luton, Kent. ‘Highland’ is one of two houses he is known to have designed in this distinct style, the other being one designed for his own occupation.

The house is situated in the popular Wealden village of Langley. Leeds castle with its beautiful attractions and events is only a few minutes’ drive away. The village has a church and two pubs, a Farmers’ market, excellent GP surgery with chemist depository, and a primary school at Leeds village nearby. Further local facilities can be found in Sutton Valence (2 miles to the south) or Headcorn (five miles to the south east), with more extensive shopping and leisure facilities provided by the county town of Maidstone.

Headcorn Aerodrome, for use of light aircraft, is about 10 miles away. Bluewater, Tunbridge Wells, Tenterden, Canterbury, Whitstable and Margate are all within easy reach.

The area is well served by schools catering for all ages in both the private and state sectors, including Sutton Valence School (whose Preparatory School is at Chart Sutton), Maidstone Grammar schools, King’s at Rochester, Ashford School for Girls and Cranbrook School.

Road and rail links in the area are good, with the M20 (3 miles) linking with Gatwick and Heathrow airports, the Channel Tunnel terminal and ports. Rail stations at Bearsted (4 miles) Headcorn (5 miles) and Staplehurst (6 miles) provide frequent commuter services into Victoria, Charing Cross and Cannon Street stations. Journey times vary between 1hr to 1hr 15mins.
