One of American architect Buckminster Fuller’s Fly’s Eye Domes – designed and patented in 1965 as a futuristic prototype for low-cost portable housing – is currently on the market for $3.5 million.

The architect made three differently-sized versions of the prototype shelters by hand prior to his death in 1983. Buckminster Fuller envisioned the domed structures as entirely self-sufficient residences which would house solar panels and water collection systems in some of its openings.

Miami Design District founder Craig Robins is the current owner of one of the domes – measuring just over seven metres in diameter – and is offering it for sale, along with Buckminster Fuller’s Rowing Needle. The Rowing Needles were designed as multi-use vessels – as well as being use for rowing, they could also be reconfigured to accommodate sailboat rigging and rudders, or connected to another set of needles to create a larger watercraft.
