What We're Hearing: SPAN: A History of London's Iconic Homes

As experts in the sale of Span houses, we’re really excited to hear about this new project. With a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Chocolate Films is working with volunteers to collect the history of key Span developments in south London. Particular attention will be paid to Cator Estate, Blackheath and Parkleys.

Co-founded by Eric Lyons, Geoffrey Townsend and Leslie Bilsby in 1948, Span sought to create affordable modernist housing in the post-war period. Lyons paid great attention to the landscape that surrounded Span developments, designing communal gardens that fostered a unique sense of community among residents.

Span: A History of London’s Iconic Homes will focus on the human stories of those living in the architecture, the architects’ ideals and the success of these remarkable developments.
