What We're Hearing: Post-war office buildings listed by English Heritage

MEA House, Newcastle, by Ryder and Yates (1972-4)
Mountbatten House (formerly Gateway House), Basingstoke, by Arup Associates (1974-6)
Bank House, Leeds, by Building Design Partnership (1969-71)

Fourteen post-World War Two office buildings have been Grade-II listed by English Heritage, including the work of leading modern architects like Norman Foster, Richard Seifert and Peter Foggo. The new additions, based in major cities across England, follow an English Heritage project to assess commercial buildings designed between 1964 and 1984. The selected buildings show how architecture has responded to radical changes in the way we work. Heritage Minister, Ed Vaizey, said: “Listed buildings are not just about historic houses and ancient monuments, they also serve to protect our recent heritage and preserve the best examples of our fantastic architecture.” The list includes four buildings by Arup & Associates (1 Finsbury Avenue in London, Gateway House in Basingstoke, Central Electricity Generating Board in Bristol, Gun Wharf in Chatham), two by Richard Seifert & Partners (Space House, London, Alpha Tower in Birmingham) and IBM Pilot Head Office, Cosham, by Foster Associates.
