Adam James and Brynn Robinson on their 1960s party house on the Manygate Lane Estate, once home to a young Tom Jones

“If walls could talk, what would they say about what’s happened here since the 1960s?” ask Brynn Robinson of the Edward Schoolheifer-designed house he shares with his partner, Adam James. We have a hunch the stories would be somewhat juicy. Not only was it once advertised to potential buyers as a party house, but one of its former residents was a young Tom Jones. In our latest film, the current owners discuss the home’s intriguing past and reveal their own tales about life inside as it comes on the market.

Adam was first invited to the Manygate Lane Estate about 20 years ago for a friend’s birthday party. “It looked like it could be in Palm Springs,” he says, describing the way it glowed, lit up on the October evening of his visit. “I’d never seen anything like it before.” A few years on and a trip to a mid-century hotel in Miami later, which affirmed the couple’s architectural desires, Adam and Brynn found themselves with the keys to this house.

It was only when they received the deeds that discovered that Tom Jones once lived here. “We went down a rabbit hole, discovering photos of him in the space from the 1960s,” Brynn says. They even have a picture of Tom in their living area. Referencing images of the singer in their home, the couple drew inspiration from its earlier days, reverting the kitchen to its original galley style and selecting a retro colour palette.

The couple also adopted the house’s Swinging Sixties spirit. The open-plan layout was quite literally made for hosting friends and entertaining – something Adam and Brynn have really taken to. It’s fitting considering how they first heard of the estate. “We’d love for it to live on as a sociable space after we leave,” notes Brynn, “and really celebrate the party attitude it was designed for.”

Fun and games aside, this house offers a superb quality of life, with its beautiful connection to the tropically planted garden and, perhaps most notably, its sun-drenched interior. “I don’t think we’ll ever live in another house that has this much natural light,” says Brynn, while Adam adds, “The house is designed to face the rising sun on one side and the setting sun on the other. I think that’s what I’ll miss most.”
