On Thursday 27th September, we hosted a party with our nearest and dearest to celebrate our recent move to new headquarters in Southwark.

Familiar faces included those featured on our Journal, including Yasuyo Harvey, Jonathan Root, Vicky Thornton, Małgorzata Bany and Genevieve Lutkin, while buyers and sellers past and present rubbed shoulders with our favourite architects and designers.

Our new office, housed in a former church hall, was redesigned to a design by TDO architecture, and the team – who are based a mere stone’s throw away – were on hand to explain the intricacies of the design.

During our recent visit to TDO’s studio for our Journal, Tom Lewith, the lead architect of the project, explained, “we were really keen to figure out how the space would be used before we started working. The former ecclesiastical building is comprised of ancillary rooms at the front, and two large halls at the rear.

“From talking to Matt and Albert, the founders of The Modern House, we learned that they were keen to use the space for events and talks, and to generally keep the building as flexible as possible,” he said.

The party was the first opportunity for us to test that flexibility, and TDO’s design certainly delivered, with the two halls coming to life as the headcount grew.

Guests were well catered for by Santos & Santos, who provided artisanal Spanish snacks like Iberico ham and regional cheeses.

The evening was enlivened by our resident DJ Corey Hemingway, who spun a soundtrack of disco, funk and soul to a receptive dancefloor. For a taste of what we got down to, check out Corey’s holiday playlist.

The move is particularly timely as we have just launched our moving-in box, a design-led welcome gift for our discerning buyers. The box, which contains hand-made objects from a roster of designers selected by Faye Toogood, was displayed on the desks TDO and Tom Graham Workshop designed and made for the main office space.

The party kickstarts a cultural and social programme at The Modern House, with more events, talks and parties to come.
