The Modern House & Semaine: our founding directors on how to buy a home

Semaine, an online magazine-meets-concept store that casts a spotlight on a different tastemaker each week, has profiled The Modern House founders Albert Hill and Matt Gibberd in a feature that comprises a short film, shoppable profile, playlist, an architectural guide of the UK, and more.

In the short film, shot at The Modern House headquarters in Southwark, Albert and Matt share their top ten tips on how to buy a home, from the importance of seeing the purchase as an emotional, as well as a financial, investment, why you shouldn’t consult your friends and family about the home you’ve fallen in love with and the value of imagining a space naked. Watch for long enough and you’ll even see Albert carry Matt over the threshold of our office.

Other sections include Albert and Matt’s list of must-see sites in the UK for design and architecture lovers, as well as the travel accessories you should pick up for the journey, including a Toogood backpack and Frescobol Carioca swim trunks. Our essential moving day items, meanwhile, range from the prosaic (eco-friendly cardboard boxes) to the celebratory (English sparkling wine).

Take a tour of our offices too, in the ‘Inside The Modern House’ section, which has choice office interior tips from us, like AYTM’s ‘Curva’ magazine holder, Hella Jongerius’ ‘Elephant Mouse Pad’ for Vitra and Eames chairs.

‘The Modern House is an evolved iteration of what an estate agent should be,’ reads Semaine’s flattering description of us, and we’re honoured to have been profiled alongside some familiar faces like Ruth Rogers, Alex Eagle, and Luke Edward Hall. See more at Semaine.com.
