We recently launched a new Property Collections feature on The Modern House website, reflecting the diversity of Britain’s modern architectural heritage. As well as the best one-off Modernist houses, the Collections cover loft apartments, conversions, plots of land, new homes, flats on the Barbican Estate, Span houses, and much more.

Each week in our new ‘Spotlight on’ series a member of The Modern House team will select their favourite properties – past and present – within one of the Collections categories.

This week Nicola, PA to the Directors, has selected her four favourite Old Meets New properties sold by, or on the market with, The Modern House …

Providence Chapel, Colerne, Wiltshire
This exemplary marriage of old and new is the widely-admired, award-winning Providence Chapel by the architect Jonathan Tuckey. It is a beautiful 19th-century chapel that has been converted and significantly extended to create a wonderful four-bedroom house.

Winchester Street, London SW1
Set over the ground and lower ground floors of a handsome mid-Victorian villa in Pimlico, this remarkable maisonette was converted by the modernist architects Stout & Litchfield in 1970. The lower floor retains its wonderful 1970s detailing, including quarry tiles on the floors, slatted ceilings, and original kitchen fittings.

Canterbury, Kent
This exquisite two-bedroom house in the centre of Canterbury is a Grade II-listed cottage, dating back to the 16th century, that has been lovingly refurbished by the architect Carl Trenfield. Working alongside a master craftsman, Trenfield has installed custom made furniture and fittings throughout, whilst retaining and renovating many of the original 500-year-old features.

Stroud, Gloucestershire
This remarkable five-bedroom house, originally built in the mid-19th Century, has been recently refurbished in spectacular style by the renowned designer Niki Turner. The Grade II-listed property can be found set back from the road behind gates in a tucked-away location just beyond the centre in the popular Gloucestershire town of Stroud.
