Ronan Mckenzie, photographer and gallerist, reveals her seven favourite things at home in Clapton, east London

The Modern House is pleased to present the first in a new film series: Seven Wonders. Each episode will see people from within our community showing us around their living spaces, while highlighting seven of their favourite things about it. This could include anything from an illuminating skylight, for instance, or a self-made sculpture – both of which happen to be a part of the selection made by the inaugural star of the show, the brilliant photographer and gallerist Ronan Mckenzie.

Our first encounter with Ronan was just over a year ago at her community-focused, artist-led gallery Home in Holloway, north London. As a photographer, Ronan is best known for capturing striking portraits and fashion imagery. Being behind the lens might be her first love, but Ronan’s curatorial eye, which she honed while hosting her first exhibition, dedicated to the work of Black British female artists, means she makes a brilliant gallerist too. But Home is not your average exhibition space: it also doubles as an events venue, a creative work hub and an exquisite library. Since our visit, we’ve been fascinated to learn what Ronan’s own home is like – and it’s every bit as pleasing as we expected.

“I really believe that everything in my space needs to fill me with love – or at least make me feel something when I look at it,” she says of her apartment in Clapton, east London, which she shares with her dog, Imani. As you might anticipate from a photographer-turned-gallerist, Ronan’s home is far from short of captivating art and imagery. Some she created by herself, including family portraits and sculptures she made during the pandemic, other pieces are by her artist friends. “I move things around all the time,” she explains, ever the curator. “I like my space to feel renewed and not too stagnant.” Likewise, Ronan’s collection of photography books appears as though in a gallery, laid open on particularly inspiring pages or propped up on shelves.

There’s plenty more to pore over at Ronan’s abode too, so step inside as we discover her seven most cherished domestic delights. And don’t forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel so you never miss an episode.
