September Cultural Diary: a chance to explore London's best houses and a treat from the Tate
Five cultural highlights from across the country:
1. Open Doors
London opens its doors for the 25th incarnation of Open House on the weekend of the 16-17 September. From contemporary civic buildings to historic private homes, the event offers the opportunity to explore and experience architecture as never before. We’re already planning our agendas and Walters Way, Bevin Court and the Alexandra and Ainsworth Estate are set to be firm favourites. Plan your visit.
2. Penn Pals
Designed by British architect John Penn, the Beach House in Shingle Street, Suffolk will be opening to the public on Saturday 9 September. A thoughtful programme of events will complement the opening, including the exhibition ‘Nine Villas in Suffolk’ curated by designer Margaret Howell, a film screening by artist and filmmaker Emily Richardson and a series of talks with Margaret Howell and Wallpaper* editor Tony Chambers. 3. LDF 2017
London Design Festival returns to the capital from 16-24 September. Exploring the theme of ‘Experience’, the festival will celebrate design in all its forms with a series of architectural installations, design shows, talks and exhibitions. We’re especially excited about Camille Walala’s ‘Villa Walala’ in Broadgate and the return of the Scotland Craft & Design Pavilion at the Design Fair. Find out what’s on.
4. The Eames Example
In the furore of London Design Festival, Open House and London Fashion Week, we’re admiring the many talents of the illustrious Charles and Ray Eames. This compendium from Gloria Koenig celebrates their furniture, photography, textiles and films as well as the couple’s experimental architecture. Get your copy.
5. A Treat from the Tate
Tate Britain dedicates its autumn exhibition to acclaimed sculptor Rachel Whiteread. The first woman to win the Turner Prize in 1993, Whiteread subverts perspective with her casts of negative space and everyday objects. While her life-sized cast of a condemned terraced house was controversially demolished in 1994, this exhibition presents celebrated works including ‘Untitled’ (100 Spaces), 1995 and ‘Untitled’ (Stairs), 2001 alongside a selection of new projects.
